I know this is not a DDO, but I'm wondering if someone could explain to me why something like this happens? Does it happen because the coin was squeezed during the minting process?

Looks to me what happens when the die is getting worn. You can also see it starting on the bottom of the 7.

Proof dies strike about 2500 to 5000 coins before they are retired, compared to +/- 250,000 for non proof coins, so it seems unlikely to have signs of deterioration.

It could just be the result of the multiple strikes that each proof gets.

On the other hand, VV recognizes at least 15 DDO's for 1970 S Proofs, so you may want someone else to look at this.

Remember we as collectors were never meant to view any of these coins under such great magnification. Could be the actual design of the feature/die or like others stated the die is starting to break down (wear)

I agree with HGK3. I would send it in, if for no other reason than to get a good explanation, for cheap. By the way, nicely graded small date!

Interesting find and discussion. My first thought was the double strike nature of proof coinage, as HGK3 said, but I am open to other ideas.

Check out VV DDO 12 and Wexler's WDDO 33 for comparison:

http://www.varietyvista.com/01b%20L...0SDDO012.htm

https://doubleddie.com//memorial-ce...dies-1970-s/

The Wexler listing shows vertical features on the 9 & 7 better, that look similar to yours and are more clear than the VV listing, but both show similar MM placement and features.

Also, both sites list die markers and other features you may want to look for to verify and that aren't in your posted photos.
