I have this nice 1888-P, and I have only been able to determine that it is a near slanted date, but cannot find any other distinguishing details except for some doubling on the obverse "R". I'll show two detail images and two of the full coin. I can post additional images if needed, but didn't want to overdo it on my first go at it. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***1. Date detail: 2. Doubled "R" (obverse, in "PLURIBUS"): 3. Full obverse: 4. Full reverse: It doesn't have any die gouges that I (or my camera) can see, and it doesn't seem to match any of the "Near Slanted Date" VAMs on the VamWorld site. I would greatly appreciate more sets of eyes here.

BTW, I just realized that there is a subforum here dedicated to VAMs ... should this thread be moved to that one?

Another question about uploading images: I noticed that there is a file size limit of 10MB? The original images of what I posted just now are much bigger, and the pixel dimensions are more like 3,000+ horizontal instead of just 900. I had received some error messages a few years back about not allowing images with more than 900 px horizontal dimension. So I resized the images to conform to these limitations before uploading them. But for VAM atribution, it might be nice to upload more high resolution images. Are these limitations still in place?

Yes, but you can crop the high-res images to the areas used for attribution.

We need clearer full coin pics, I personally cannot make out much from these. It's on the bubble of what the higher ups may consider a "normal date" too, so you may want to expand your search. I would consider it a near date but, ya know.... I did a search with what we have to work with and came up empty so far.

Thanks, @-makecents-! I think my first image with the date detail (which is actually more or less full resolution) shows that the date position is definitely a "near date", and the difference in distance between the bottom of "1" and the bottom of "8" to the denticles is consistent with the VAM images for "near slanted date", but I know that there may be subtle variations that I am not aware of. I would love to post bigger full coin images, but as @jbuck said, there are limitations to how big these can be. At the same time, I am still wondering why, since the file size limitation is 10MB, and the forum software only shows a smaller version when viewed in the thread and opens up a new window when clicking on the image. I need to use different lighting in order to bring out more contrast -- I took these with natural sunlight which doesn't give as much detail. Will continue with better images once I have the lighting set up properly.

Quote: and the forum software only shows a smaller version when viewed in the thread and opens up a new window when clicking on the image. The smaller image you see is just scaled version of the large image done by your browser in code. That is, the exact same image you see as full size is just shown smaller in the thread when your browser renders it. There are not two copies of the image. This is done to prevent sideways-scrolling in the topic pages. The 10MB limit is from the software used to automatically optimize the images when you upload them*. The optimizer reduces the file size to under 500KB to reduce the amount of storage used on the server because storage is not free. This keeps Bobby's costs down and our doors open. There is no reason at all why you cannot reduce your image below 10MB before uploading it. Likes I said, crop the images to the areas of the coin used for attributions. When you save it, you should be able to reduce the file size then. The forum optimizer is going to reduce it anyway. * Now, if someone wants to pay for something they feel like is better...

I think I have the lighting issue solved. Maybe we should do this one step at a time? I'm kind of new at this, so please be patient. This is a crop of the date area at full resolution. I could get closer and get more pixels, but for just verifying the date variety, I think this is enough. Can we at least agree that this is a "near slanted date" from this picture? Otherwise, there isn't much sense in continuing down this path: Yes or no?

Looking at the last image I posted, now I can see why there might be a "gray area" where this could be a normal but "slanted" date.

I thought that I had seen doubling on the "R" in "PLURIBUS" which might have been indication of VAM-24. But now I see that although there is a small amount of doubling on the "R", there is actually much more pronounced doubling on the "I" and the "B": What does this tell us?
