1929 was the year Martin Coles-Harman, the wealthy owner of the private island of Lundy in the Bristol Channel, issued his own coins, in denominations of Half and One Puffin, equivalent in value to the British halfpenny and penny. The coins were given in change to tourists visiting the pub and shop on the island, but the Government declared that they were not legal tender and fined Coles-Harman the princely sum of... £5! I don't know if he paid it in the form of 1,200 1-Puffin coins! Further Lundy coins were minted with similar designs in 1965 and 1977 but no attempt was made to circulate them, and they are generally regarded as fantasies for collectors.
