US Mint - The United States Mint (Mint) announces its newest circulating coin program, the Youth Sports Coin Collection, and shares the coin designs for 2027 for the first time. Beginning in 2027 and continuing through 2030, the Mint will issue five quarter-dollar coins per year featuring youth sports, and one half-dollar coin per year showcasing Paralympic sports. The program is authorized by the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 (Public Law 116-330), signed into law on January 13, 2021, by President Donald J. Trump.

"Participation in sports teaches teamwork, perseverance, and the value of working toward a common goal," said Mint Director Paul Hollis. "Through the Youth Sports Coin Collection, the Mint has a unique opportunity to instill a sense of national pride and to celebrate the role sports play in the lives of all Americans."

Each quarter in the collection will have a design on the reverse (tails) that is emblematic of a sport played by American youth. The common obverse (heads) depicts a likeness of George Washington in a new design created specifically for the program.

Similarly, each half dollar will have a design on the reverse that is "emblematic of a sport tailored to athletes with a range of disabilities, including physical impairment, vision impairment and intellectual impairment." The common obverse features a likeness of John F. Kennedy, also created specifically for the program.

The sports lineup for the four-year program includes the following:

Youth Sports Quarters
2027: Baseball, Golf, Soccer, Softball, Snowboarding
2028: Football, Swimming, Gymnastics, Lacrosse, Track and Field
2029: Basketball, Wrestling, Tennis, Cheerleading, Karate
2030: Figure Skating, Skiing, Skateboarding, Volleyball, Ice Hockey

2028: Para Climbing

Public participation played an important role in developing this program. In early 2025, the Mint invited Americans to provide input on the sports they wanted to see represented on the Nation's quarters. The Mint developed a list of sports for public consideration in consultation with the President's Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition and the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. From January 22 through February 20, 2025, members of the public reviewed the list and shared their preferences through an online survey.

The Youth Sports Coin Collection builds on the Mint's longstanding tradition of leveraging circulating coins to tell the American story while providing a new opportunity for young people, families, athletes, coaches, and coin collectors to engage with the Nation's coinage.

The new obverse designs are interesting.

I am glad to get confirmation the half dollar is one design per year, like the Native American dollars.

Overall not bad, but I'll reserve my judgement until I see the designs in person. As usual, they are too cluttered for the surface area. The reverse designs are pretty good, except soccer, which looks like the kid is about to get hit by the ball.

I don't really have a desire to collect these except that my OCD compels me to keep going with modern series. I do think these could be popular with kids, more so than most coins, because they're actually relatable. So if these programs inspire the next generation of numismatists, then that would be fantastic!

The baseball girl looks like she is either going to miss the ball or knock it up and over backwards.

I do like the obverse design, but not so much for the revers sides - Does everybody really have to get a 'participation' trophy?

How about a few years for construction workers? Concrete workers, Framers, Electricians, low voltage, painters, drywallers, flooring folks, to name a few trades? We want our trophy too

If the new Washington obverse looks as good in-hand as the above illustrations depict, I'll call it a winner. The current cow-eyed depiction of Jefferson on the nickel could use a similar refresh.

The reverses don't do much for me. I'd like the Baseball reverse much more if the chain-link fence was deleted or replaced with a lively-looking group of spectators in the background. The current depiction looks much more like batting practice than an actual game.

The reverse of the Baseball (chain-link fence)
and the reverse of the Golf (golf ball) will probably have some crazy varieties.

I can see the Golf version having a huge chunk broken out of the ball by whatever mintage means,
and then it gets labeled the "Death Star". LOL

Like the obverses. . .they should look very nice in proof and silver proof sets. The junior golfer looks like an ANGC Drive, Chip, and Putt participant. . .Snowboarding conveys the motion and energy of the sport rather well.
