Wish I knew the story behind it.

It looks like it was week celebration but you could only spend this on the first couple days (weekend perhaps?). That is what I like about these types, always a interesting story behind it.

I remember my grandfather telling me this once back in the mid 90's. I still don't get it though. Did this use to be a problem back in the day when kids didn't know a real nickel from a piece of wood? Btw.. if it matters he grew up in the 30's.
