I found this Nickel in my change and I think it looks to be a Near Leaf, No Shoulder Fold Mule. Can anyone tell me if it is? And how mcuh something like this might be worth given the slight rough condition.

It looks like a near leaf but to know if it is the mule we need to have a clear focused pic to verify the "I" of DEI. Hope to see clear pics. :)

Hi! -bry_guy- It's hard to say anything with a picture like that,to be honest!
---It looks like a Near leaf yes, SF?
---If it's a normal 53 Near SF it's not worth anything but face value unless in MS, but give us a better picture to say better and here's a question to you?
---What makes you think it's a mule?

Well thanks for the welcome!!

And sorry for the crappy pictures! I'm having a hard time uploading a better picture. I will have to try re-scanning because taking pictures with my digital camera don't seem to be working, they are all blurry... does anybody have suggestions?

I don't know all too much about coins or coin collecting but I thought I would see what I might have because I do have a few oldre nickels. To be honest what I did is I went and got that Charlton Coin book and looked to see what nickels were worth the most and I tried to see if I had any, and I did. I actually took this nickel to a coin shop and he did say it is a NSF (no shoulder fold) Near Leaf Mule. But that it is in rough shape so I could only get 90$ for it so I was thinking I should maybe send it away to get graded?

Any suggestions? 90 seemed a little low, from what I have read the near leaf mule seems very rare.

If you want to sell it,have it graded, you won't get top dollar for this as a raw coin.
Nice find and welcome!
BTW I don't believe Charlton's refers to this coin as a mule. You've obviously done some research on this coin before you posted, you're well on your way to becoming a successful collector.

No they don't refer to it as a mule at all. Up until a week ago I didn't even know what a mule was. after I saw the big value in the book for the 1953 nickel I just searched on here and people kept referring to a "mule" so I had to AGAIN go off and find out what a mule actually was haha... needless to say their is ALOT to know!!

-bry_guy- I misread your post, if it's a NSF then yes it's worthy of getting graded, but that is speculative as we have not seen any good picture of it!
---If you are looking for advice get some more opinions before sending it in and if it is, it's a good precautionary measure to document your find very well first.
---It wont cost you more than a little time to do this as I have had some experience.
---It is in somewhat rough shape, so NSF can be mistaken! I've been there with the SF/NSF question with the 54. Patience is a virtue.
---I have used CCCS and was my choice.
---If (NSF) $90 is a little low but hard to say as to it's grade.
---Suggestion find a friend with a decent digital camera and tripod would be better or someone with a good scanner to transfer an image to the site.
