Double Struck Dime With Weird Indent Reverse

Yokozuna Pillar of the Community United States 4618 Posts	Posted 06/23/2011 2:43 pm This Dime was struck twice with a planchet between the coin and the die on the second strike. The weird thing is the indent is NOT curved as it should be. The reverse looks as if the second planchet was clipped. What do you think? Shouldn't the edge of the indent be curved? The coin also looks different than most double strikes because of the amount of Reeding showing on the Obverse. Could the strong reeding have been caused by a clipped second planchet also? Anyone have ideas on this one? Of all the Double Strikes and Indents I've had, this is the first one I've seen like this. I've seen "Mated Pairs" on ebay where they just push 2 off center coins edge to edge and if the line up, BINGO, mated pair! The thing is they sell them for more! Not true mated pair money, but 4 or 5 times what the 2 coins should be worth if sold alone. I love searching bags, so maybe someday I'll find a pair. I have found a die break progression on 5 South Dakota State Quarters with Washington going from a small spot on the right eye next to the nose to a full "eye patch." mikediamond Pillar of the Community United States 2752 Posts	Posted 06/23/2011 6:49 pm It is a peculiar off-center uniface strike. But there's no telling why the internal margin of the uniface surface is concave instead of convex. The grooved "slide zone" on the obverse face indicates that the edge of the obverse die was suffering from collar clash. Since the left side of the design rim on the normal first strike shows no signs of collar clash, it's likely that the second strike was delivered by an adjacent die pair. A clip on the coin in the collar was one of the things I thought could cause it, but that makes no sense. My other idea was that the other coin didn't make it all the way into the collar. I'm sure it could have been a number of other things that caused it, it's just that I've never seen it before. I do like that it left the Obverse with a strong reed mark. Quote: Very nice! It should match the curve of a 2nd coin, but this example has another edge curving in the opposite direction. If it was just an overlapping blank, it should only have an opposite curve to the main strike edge, but this coin has an impression of a parallel curve to the main strike. As in the photo below, the indent should match the red line, but it has another curve in the indent going in the opposite direction, as marked in green. This is all just speculation and guessing on my part. I know that it's different from any of the indented coins I've had, so I wanted to get some input on my theories.
