I think there was a coinage magazine or coin values issue on the phantom coins in 2007. I cant remember exactly what coins where in it, but ill have to look this up.
My books that include half dollars dont list this year either."major variety and oddities guide to US coins 7th edition(1977)" and "early half dollar varieties(1970)"
I'm familiar with it. There were no 1804 half dollars struck but two 1804 dated obverse dies were made but not hardened. These were overdated in 1805 and put into use. The second die shows almost the entire 4 clearly below the 5. The 1804 half dollar was a piece that turned out to have been tooled to remove all traces of the 5 and just leave the 4. I believe it is discussed in Don Taxay's Counterfiet, Mis-struck, and Unofficial US coins.
