3 possible explanations for this story. A. He actually found one in circulation. There have been several instances where high end coin collectors have thrown high dollar coins pack into the populace. B. He already had it in his collection and was bored and wanted to make a dramatic show of it. C. He just bought it and also was quite bored. This falls into the "too good to be true" catagory but if he really did find it then kudos to him. ......assuming it's actually real

AND that too is a good possibility. Since one of the most counterfeited coins in the world. Or someone just dumped a stolen coin collection in a bank as change Or someone had a jar, can, box, etc. of coins laying around for a rainy day and finally dumped them at a bank.

Sweet! Better than the 09s (no VDB) I found a couple of weeks ago.
As far as it being possible to find one of these, I believe it's totally possible. A number of more prominent coin shows over the years have made a media event of placing one of these in circulation to drum up interest in the show. Also, unfortunately, coin collections get stolen, many of them by people that have no idea what they stole. They just see money, and it being coins, they throw it into their local Coinstar to get paper for it. Plus, kids still go through dresser drawers looking for ice cream truck money. They definitely don't turn up frequently, but they definitely could turn up. I found the above mentioned 09s a couple weeks ago in a roll from a bank that also contained a 12d, 24d, and a 22d. These things do happen.

I was reading an old thread from 2008 about roll searching for Wheaties and I believe it was just Carl that suggested buying a bag of pennies instead of boxes or rolls to find older coins.....good call !

That's quite a story! If true, a collection must have been taken to the bank; that 1909 shows less wear than LWCs from the '20s-30s that turn up for me.
