What a fun topic ! I might have to consciously start this too. I do seem to pick up anything nice from my birth year, 1952, and my Dad's was 1924, so that means a few of those as well.

Using the 'Advanced search' engine in Numista, it's easy to quickly get a list of coins issued in any given year. For 1968, (not my birth year), I end up with 45 pages of coins. Narrowing down to silver only, that still makes 6 pages. Here's the link for that particular one: http://en.numista.com/catalogue/ind...t=&dg=&w=&g=

Very interesting Gwyde. I did a search on Numista, and it turned up 89 pages of 441 coins. I am almost halfway there. That's for circulating and non circulating. Drops to 377 for circulating only

I have looked through the report of the 441 coins. It gave me things to check on some varieties, but that site is not comprehensive. I found 9 countries and 22 coins that weren't listed.

Which countries? It's a collaborative website so you could add these. However, they don't care very much about varieties.

From my Birth Year Set, missing countries on the Numista list: Bahrain Egypt Iran Israel Japan Jordan Morocco Spain Syria
And missing coins from: Albania Nepal
I see the link at the bottom of the page "A coin doesn't exist in the catalog yet? Add it yourself!" and I am going to look and see what's involved

I think the problem is with the search function rather than the entire catalog. Searching for coins of one particular date does not work very well. Take a look at the list of countries.

Bobby, I have been looking there, and it has tempted me to get an ebay account.

Seeing as my year of birth is 1985, this sounds like an awesome idea. Never thought of it before. Heck, most coins should be dirt cheap in UNC for me!
Great idea. Thank you. I might have to start this now.

I had bought the mint and proof sets for my birth year, but hadn't really thought beyond that until I bought a Lucky Penny from Ireland. That is what really inspired me to try for world coins. From 1968, I currently have 223 coins from 82 different countries.
