So I'm browsing the mint's website and noticed the 2012 silver plated loonie.

http://www.mint.ca/store/coin/25th-...-prod1210001

Flip the coin around to look at the obverse side and you'll see "SP / PA" under the portrait where the RCM logo would normally be located current circulated coins.

I'm assuming this marks the coin as silver plated in english / french. Is this going to start appearing new collector coins going forward?

Silver plated. That's a new one for canadian NCLT (I think).

But again, the "mintage while supplies last" which could mean "produce until market saturation - and beyond". Tough call. No intrinsic value. A first. No set mintage. Boring design.

I buy one.

Really? silver PLATED? ... sounds like a cheap ebay ad to be honest. What's next, 100 mills silver and heavy gold electroplating? It's hurting more and more to be a fan of RCM

At first I had the same reaction and wondered why this wasn't just a regular loonie, gold plated perhaps. But then I realized that this was 25-year anniversary (silver jubilee) thus the silver plating.

There is a Sterling Silver Loon Dollars Series from 2006-2010.

It would have fit into the sterling series - if it was sterling! Plating just seems like a terrible move and will be confusing. Bad move.

Since it is included with a story book that seems to be geared towards children, I am thinking they may have gone with the silver plating rather than sterling to keep the price lower so these would be more apt to be given as gifts.

I was wondering the same thing, but perhaps they will have a double date in the 2012 regular loonie when it is issued since they just came out with the Parks Canada 2011 quarter for circulation.

Still two months left in 2011!

loonie started in 1987, 25th anniversary is 2012, but toonie started in 1996, I haven't seen any special toonie yet, maybe RCM will make another gold/silver toonie?

True, and one was made in 2004 also... Goes to show there are far too many NCLT!

All the more reason to just make the whole coin sterling or fine silver. Plating in silver is just so... superficial.

Is this the first time RCM silver plated a coin?

^^^ I don't know of any silver plated canadian coins other than this. There is a gold plated loons one though. It's uhmm... superficial as well.

Selling silver plated coins to baby's and children... RCM's new target market... lol...
I'm surprised they didn't include a sucker as well as a children's book. I kid...
Usually the RCM plated gold on silver not some already plated nickel.
It obviously seems cheap to me... and a bad move in quality and reputation.
