I wish these were in general circulation, they're beauties. Very patriotic and yet very tied to our British past.

What's weird about them is that not everyone really uses the American terminology here, 50 cents and 50 cent coin reign supreme.

Just started my 50C Collection journey... First I'm trying to get get rolls for 1968-Date (I like to pick a choose and don't mine selling the extra's for some profit for later purchases)... So far I have got 74 (No missing "S"'s :( ), 1984-Date... about 15 more rolls to go :). I have a feeling it going to be tough to find these ones even though the mintages are much much higher.

I think I know the answer to this, but is it remotely likely that any Canadian bank branches would ever have boxes of 50-cent pieces on hand these days? They've been out of circulation for so long, and even before that were basically not circulated, but a lot of 50-cent pieces were minted after they went nickel in 1968 - have they been largely reclaimed by the mint? It would be pretty sweet to walk out of a bank with a box of circulated (nickel) 50-cent pieces!

^ It is unlikely that you will find a bank with a box on hand. If you go to the bank and request it, they might be able to order one for you.

I was ordering boxes from RBC pre 2002, but with such a high mintage for that year I figured all I'd get after that was the 02's. Glenzy1 would you adopt me, lol.

I asked my local branch about ordering 50-cent pieces and the teller said they can't even source them any more. Accordingly, she also said they very rarely see them at the branch.

The "Missing A" and "Missing AD" occurs through several years of the mid-1970s. I consigned a 1975 Missing AD to Torex a few years ago (ICCS MS-64), I was surprised how much bidding activity there was on that coin. Weak strikes are very common through the 1970s as well.

I notice you are from Ottawa, are you a member of the Ottawa Numismatic Society? I can bring my variety box of 50c coins to the next ONS meeting, and you can pick through it. I am giving a talk in June on weak strikes, and will be passing around a number of nickel 50c examples.

I haven't joined yet but it's on my 'to do list'. Just been so busy the last few months with work & family. I've been in contact with R. F. who has given me the relevant info. Was hoping to make it to the RAC on Sunday for the show but it's looking like I won't be able to fit it in now.

Hey everybody,

I hope I'm not jacking a thread here. I'm relatively new to Canadian Coin Collecting.

I have this 2000 50 cent piece and it seems to look different from the rest of mine. The fields seems to be not glossy. Almost like there are striations, if that makes any sense.

Both sides have the same effect. I have only taken a picture of the one side and I hope it is sufficient enough for you guys to help me out. Also, looking through another one, my 1953; I read in another post in this thread about NSF should strap thing. Can someone explain to me what I should be looking for? I know of the nickels having this type of difference but have never been able to identify what is what.

AND, not to add more to my post here, lol, on my 1953 the denticles on the reverse seem to "reed" into the rim. Is this normal? On the obverse, the rim almost seems as though it may have been struck slightly off.

I hope I have provided enough information.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thnx

Thank you DBM.

What does that mean? Does it make it any more "special" than any other 2000 piece? Or is it just one to collect? I am a complete noob to Canadian coins.

I understand the condition is not the greatest but also not the worst.

Thnx.

Not "special" but "different". Specimen coins are specially struck for collector sets and have a finish and quality of strike different from circulation strikes.Specimen coins '71 and later are generally worth less than circulation coins in similar grade.
