MintedNotPrinted, it angers me to think about coins like that, or really any coins, being melted to produce bullion. There has been an established market to buy and sell 90% intact for its bullion value, for generations.

Thank you, seamonkey5150, vector, and GLB49 Vector Ze, I assure you they are picked down to junk and/or scooped up by stackers before they send them out, but unless it's a key date or some other obvious rarity, they don't really care to sell any separately in the case with gold and MS Morgan etc. The PM store nearby, however...

MintedNotPrinted Back when I had a decent income I bought quite a bit of so-called "Junk Silver", a term for 90% that I despise. Anyway, I examined every coin and assembled a pretty good starter for Mercs & Rosie, Washingtons, Walkers & Kennedys. I'm sure I sorted through a few thousand dollars worth, face value. There are keepers in them thar junk coins. But due to the despicable and long running practice of melting them into boring bars and rounds, the mintage figures are unreliable. It's not much different from looking for coins in your pocket change, and I don't see many people here finding fault with that. Just as I bought 90% primarily for its silver content, you will see common silver coins sold in bulk on any online or B&M dealer. It's simply better than bars and rounds.
I don't even understand the economics of it. 90% sells as bullion, without the added expense of melting, rerfining, assaying, and forming the final boring product.

Re: My recent post about 38 Mint Set Quarters, which I attempted to post photos of, and they were all really bad? I am playing with my flatbed scanner and getting better, not great, results. For some reason it messes with the color. There's not this much variation to the naked eye.

Thanks, y'all. One of my numismatic goals for 2026 is to improve on imaging. Obviously, I've still got work to do. I have some seller photos to post today. This won't be in hand for a few days. I just picked up the 1982 Philly US Mint Souvenir Set. This leaves only the 1983 Philly to fill the two-year (1982-83) gap in US Mint Set production. So, from 1959 through present my US Mint Set collection will only be missing: 1961, 1976, and the 1983 Philly Souvenir Set. Only three to go!
