Tuff call on this one. You really should check with Chuck on coppercoins.com about this one. In his book on Looking Through Lincoln Cents, he has several pages on the 1909S VDB. As is stated on page 75 of one of his books, this is the most counterfeited coins in the USA. And in the enlargements in that book, there are some that show the V.D.B. sort of like the one shown here. And according to the book, it is the S mint mark that is the most commonly added on feature. Check out his web site and/or ask him. He is usually on this forum and odd that he didn't jump in on this one.

I have to say fake. That VDB is NOT at all right IMO. The S looks hokey too.
AND ACETONE doesn't HURT COINS! Yeesh. Acetone is not considered cleaning. But it wouldnt make a difference here anyway. Unless of course the S was super glued on.

Sorry, but even with the bad pictures I can tell this is a fake. The best thing to do with it is either cut it in half or stamp "COPY" on it so it is no longer out there in the wild fooling collectors.
I can't remember who is was some years ago that was intentionlly buying and destroying fake S VDB's regardless of price paid. It was a nobel, if not futile, effort.

I should add, if you want to be 101% sure, take it to any local coin dealer and see if they'll buy it from you. LOL

Quote: I should add, if you want to be 101% sure, take it to any local coin dealer and see if they'll buy it from you. LOL Good advice. lol. And definitely fake. The date looks way off, and the vdb looks like vdd. It is also too centered, the vdb is supposed to be a little to the left. Not even a really good fake. lol.

Sorry, but this coin screams fake. The date, mm, and VDB are all diagnostically incorrect for this coin.

Totally fake Chinese coin. Sorry. There is no serif on the original and the VDB is totally botched.

It was in a batch of wheats bought as a lot, so I didn't get burned, I will take the advise and mark it with a "copy" mark and put in my collection a reference.
Thanks for all the advice!

Wow, that guide was really informative. Very detailed pictures. It also shows that this coin is definitely fake because of the serif on the 1 and the almost closed 9's.

Actually a bad fake, the vdb isn't even close. Since you don't have anything (much) into it, I think it's kind of neat to own.

Even though its fake you could put it in your book until you have the real thing.

I have been weighing the possibility of keeping it as is but don't want it to get out into the wrong hands where someone could scam an unsuspecting collector. Choices, Choices!!
