As you can see this is my first post on here although I have been reading and getting information from everyone here for a while.

My grandfather bought me a Dansco penny album when I was about 12 from a local coin shop. The owner was a good friend and huge collector and he included some of the harder to find coins when I bought it. Nothing expensive but ones I wouldn't likely find in circulation. now 15 years later I'm getting serious about trying to complete this book and work on others as well.

This brings me to my questions. I think I have nearly all of the common cents and some harder to find but I dont know which ones I should concentrate on. I'll give you a list of my missing coins.

1909 S
1909 S VDB
1910 S
1911 S
1912 D
1913 S
1914 D
1914 S
1915 S
1922 D
1922 Plain
1924 D
1931 S
1933 D
1975 S
1979 S (both types)
1982 S
1984 S - present S mint marks

Now...I've ready alot about your opinions on collectiong proofs in the dansco albums. I'm not interested in breaking up my proof sets so if I decide to get these coins I would have to buy them locally or on ebay. I'm still undecided on those coins.

Should I concentrate on getting everything execpt the 1909-s, VDB S, 14 D, and 22 Plain? I obtained almost all of my album from searching through coins so I would have to buy most of these.

Or do I go after the more expensive coins and get lower grades that I can afford and upgrade them one day in the future when I can afford to do so?

Thanks for your help and opinions!

to CCF. I think I would get the more expensive ones now, they will probably go up in price in the near future. You should decide on what grade to collect too. Then buy the high end ones in that grade. The others you can find roll searching or buy unsearched (right) rolls or bags and find the ones you need. You can always trade up in condition as the years go on. Buy what you can afford now and upgrade later.

Thanks John...I didn't know how likely it would be to find any of the missing coins roll searching. I just got $100 worth from the bank and looked through about 1500 pennies last night with my wife. I found alot of AU or BU pennies to replace lower grade coins in my book and I'm in the process of updateing it to the current year. I just ordered the last page from Dansco. Thanks again for your help!

This hobby/addiction is a life long thing so you have plenty of time to find most of the coins searching rolls and pocket change unless your a million years old now Enjoy the hobby.

I agree with getting the keys first even though I'm not doing that .

also choose which grades you want and go for them. if it take you longer to save up then thats the case. I wouldnt buy a low grade so a year later you can buy a higher grade coin.

Also I went on a proof buying frenzy a bout a month ago if I have any of them I will send them too you.

Welcome to the family

By the way. your collection is more complete then mine so congrats on that.

1. Stick around here and post questions and reply until you can buy from here. Lots safer and possibly cheaper.
2. Don't know if you drive a car but you should look up to see if any coin shows in your area. Just try Google and coin shows and your state. Possibly the best place to buy any coins
3. Also, check if there are any coin clubs in your area. They too sometimes have coin shows.
4. Note the amount of coins Minted for those so called Key coins and remember that every day there are more and more coin collectors popping up. With well over 300,000,000 people in the USA, those Key coins will deminish in availability real soon
5. Either get to know fakes well or only buy slabbed, certified real coins for those last Key Dates in your set.

Don't worry about the grades of your coins. Since most are everyday types, our of circulation coins, no need to go nuts yet on trying to improve all of the rest for now.
Proofs too are usually available separately at coin shows.
If you can afford them, get those lousy expensive ones now since as I said, the amount of coin collectors is increasing fantastically lately due to the Mint's making all those dumb quarters.
And again be carefull of those 09S, 09S VDB and 14D ones since those are counterfeited as much as possible.
That 22 Plain too is available in several varieties and some are reasonably priced. For extensive infomation on those coins, try http://www.coppercoins.com

I've mentioned this on this forum several times now. Not all coin shows are advertised well. For example by me there is one of about 80 to 100 dealers that seldom makes it to the listings if I go to Google and type in coin shows. If I just used one listing, I'd miss that show every Month.
Another thing is some coin clubs too have small coin shows that are not advertised enough or well enough. When you look up coin shows, try several sites just to make sure. And if there is a coin store in your area, ask them too. In many areas coin store people set up tables at a coin show on a Sunday and keep their store closed that day. Also, great way and place to advertise their stores.
If and when you do go to a coin show, ask every dealer possible about other shows in the area.
