My wife surprised me the other day and brought home this 1854 Large Cent. This is the first one I have ever owned. I have an idea as to what the grade is but would like your opinions. More importantly though, I would like your opinion as to whether the coin appears to be original and uncleaned, dipped ect.

Hair above brow showing slight wear, all other details showing good. VF20 I am not an authority, but the Large Cent seems to original and does not appear to have been cleaned.

Looks like a solid VF-20 to me, too. Unlikely that it would have been cleaned in that grade. I can't tell precisely with those photos, but there appears to be a tiny bit of corrosion on the obverse around star #1.

Nice first Large Cent !!!

Yes there is some black spots that do appear to be a little corrosion. I too feel this is a VF coin. I also don't think this coin has been cleaned but I don't want to rely on my own biased opinions.

I will submit another pic of the obverse lightened a tad to show the surfaces a little better.

Sorry, but I have to say F15 on this one. It appears that there is pretty significant wear on the top of the coronet and at the curls. Keep in mind that I am very conservative in grading copper.

I do not believe that this coin has been harshly cleaned. It probably was cleaned in some way a long time ago which would account for the attractive toning on the reverse. I wouldn't let that bother me though, since so many of these have been cleaned at some time or another - mostly when they were first released.
