Well danlos9551, look at the silver lining to your experience. You are now rich in knowledge on an important aspect of numismatics. Most people take years to acquire this information, but with a little extra money, you have accomplished much in the 6 months since you have ventured into Canadian coins. While I don't necessarily support the ICCS bashing to the extent you are, I do agree with some of the recent inconsistency ICCS has developed in the past 3-4 years (you are already preaching to the converted in my case).

It is a minefield for new collectors, that is why joining coin clubs and participating in online discussion forums is a tremendous asset, so that the knowledge is acquired from others, without throwing money down the drain. Reading between the lines, your story is an important lesson for all. Most folks would be ashamed of making expensive blunders like this, and file it away as a lesson learned. I am glad you are sharing it, for the benefit of newer collectors. DBM is right, however, the responsibility of making informed and educated purchasing decisions is ultimately your responsibility. Regardless of the TPG, this basically boils down to the old adage and a quote that has served me well through life:

Look before you leap for as you sow, ye are like to reap. - Samuel Butler

Danlos, your bashing of ICCS in particular and Canadian coin dealers generally is getting quite offensive and shows a level of both business sense and intelligence that possibly needs to be questioned . Much to your dislike, yes ICCS standards are recognized as an authority on Canadian coinage and are generally quite tough. Over the years I have personally submitted many thousands of coins (starting in 1986) to ICCS and others. The grading philosopies are different in ALL of the TPG s. Most often the ICCS coins are superior and DO bring good money when auctioned or sold as compared to similiar graded PCGS or NGC coins. And yes, Danlos I should know, having been a dealer for many years and maintaining an excellent world wide reputation in the field of numismatics. Also in these discussions maintain a little decorum and quit bashing well meaning folks dedicated to improving the hobby. Before the advent of third party grading and authentication, there were incredible games played, with results that were beyond belief!

Man, I am a bit of a hypo"coin"driac ... danlos, on page 1 (your 2nd post) you show 5 photos of an 1894 50 cent piece with some nasty blotches on it .... ummm, you claim that it has been cleaned with chemicals => I have a coin with similar blotches on it, but I panicked that I had PVC damage/poisoning!?

I looked-up PVC poisoning but I didn't find too many examples, and most/all of them claimed a "green" colour being present ... blah-blah-blah ... anyway ...

=> does PVC damage look like those 5 photos, or do I merely have a coin that has been cleaned? (which would also be bad, but wouldn't cause me to run-out and buy some acetone, ASAP, right?)

thanks ... oh, and "anybody" can answer (thanks, in advance)

Well I have reached a conclusion that from this point forward , if I see a posting by danlos9551, I am just going to skip over it. It's the same old thing, TPG complaining. Same thing, different day. If I wanted to listen to that much complaining I would have stayed married.

Steve...I dont have much experience with PVC...I had one coin with a very thin greenish film that cleaned quite nicely with goo-gone, and a dip...it was an ICCS coin that was rejected by PCGS as "PVC residue"

This particular coin cleaned quite nicely and the blotches disappeared, along with all the toning.

Just as with some other coins I posted in another thread, as well as the 1936 quarter in this thread...I suspect droplets were spilled or sprayed on the coins by accident,

resulting in reaction with the metal that was not intended.

Why the cleaning process wasn't taken further, I dont know. People get scared with their coins. I cut it out of the flip and went caveman on it...it cleaned up very nicely...

Why the person then sent the blotched coin to ICCS to get graded, and the submitted it to Torex...well, I guess the intent was clear. Successful too.

Perhaps Danlos should give up Numismatics and consider stamp collecting instead? Anyone agree?

Given the little guy rolling on the floor laughing, I *think* it was meant as a joke.

I am here first as a collector, & second for the entertainment factor. Keep up the good work danlos & glenzy. Two such opposites.
