With gold and silver being so high, I figured there probably wouldnt be a much better time to sell my High School class ring.

I took it to my dealer today and he valued it at 275.

I went ahead and traded it even up for a 1911 Indian quarter eagle in AU condition. It is not slabbed but he is an honest guy and I could not argue with his grade. Its a nice coin.

So, without seeing a picture yet, did I do good? Was this a smart investment, considering I have never one time worn the ring and probably wouldnt? My only regret is just kind of the personalization of the ring... but, if gold plummets and its worth nothing, my quarter eagle has numismatic value. Its not going anywhere.

Just wanted to share, will put up pics ASAP.

Oh, also, would you guys suggest having it graded/slabbed? I like raw coins, but I also dont have anything else this nice.

A fair deal, I think. This isn't a scarce issue, but you're right in believing it'll lose far less of its' value if the bottom drops out of the gold market.

I think you did good, I'd rather have a gold coin then a gold ring.
Someday I'll find out what my gold watch is worth and make a similar trade.

Congratulations on your first gold.
I know your gold collection will soon grow in numbers.
You have started a very smart investment.
Gold investment is like a real estate investment,
the only difference is you can hold gold right infront
of you, and can always check with ease any time you want to enjoy seeing it
Slab is great but I prefer raw because you don't have to worry much about holding gold coins with bare hands, just make sure they don't get scratches.

Gold is one of the most, if not THE most secure investments on the planet. To roughly quote a book a read in High School "Cash money and other investments are made by man, so they are imperfect. But gold is made by God, so it will always maintain its value"

Slabbing it is a good idea if you want to sell it as an investment, as it will increase its liquidity. However, if you intend to keep it as part of your collection, then slabbing isn't essential if you do want to do it.

Dont bother slabbing it until you are actually going to sell. Nice trade!

I love gold but would never consider it an investment, it is a hedge a bet against paper money printed by the Federal Reserve or EU, etc. Gold has intrinisic value, and it mantains that level pretty close, it's the other economic factors that make it raise and fall in price, A great example is an old story often told;

In the 1920 a hand tailored fine mens suit cost around $20.00 or an ounce of gold, in the 80's it was $400.00 to get that same suit or the same 1 ounce of gold, today $1800.oo for the suit the same for an ounce of gold. It keeps you even in market flucuations, I love to own it, I hate to sell it. But I would never consider it an investment.

Congratulations on your first gold coin. Ironically, a quarter eagle was also my first gold coin. Bought in the mid 90s when gold was $270 an oz! I'm sure it won't be your last- it wasn't my last one :)
