Who did the sandblasting?

I agree. I bought the set for the reverse designs. The frosting on the obverse is coarse and distracting. The combination of ultra-low relief & sandblasted frosting just leaves a silhouette of the queen. All of her features have been lost in the sandstorm.

Something must have went wrong in the manufacturing. It's hard to believe it was done on purpose...

which do you think is cheaper to do, ultra-low relief & coarse finish or the high detailed frosting of yore.

A rhetorical question, no doubt.

Perhaps a junior engraver was instructed to go nuts with the laser etcher?

This side of the coin won't be winning any awards.

Is it this set that contains the offensive coins.I was going to order one,the pic at the mint seems to show brilliant on brilliant, but the description says proof finish.

Yes DBM, this is the offending set. It is nothing like what is displayed on the RCM site.

Look at the Queen for instance.

Not sure if I've missed her exit, but input from the RCM rep would be nice right now

Just checking in and will certainly pass this string of feedback/opinions along to the right people at the Mint.

How does quality get worse over time? You would think the technology would only get better?

technology getting better means naught when the motivation to apply the new tech is not there.

Props to RCM with getting a rep on the forum and she's been great with responses and forwarding info back to the mint, but I'm still feeling the pessimist at the moment. With polls on this subforum getting under 30 participants, even assuming there are 10x the readership, I don't think there are sufficient buying power on this forum to sway RCM's actions one way or another. Especially when the gist I'm getting is that we are still buying up the lower quality coins.

Edited to add pessimistic outlook

Just wondering here...if they chose this kind of frosting for the geometric reverse design, which obviously doesn't work well for the portrait?
