We have all seen the new gold sovereign design for 2012. If you haven't you can find it on The Royal Mint website. I want to know what everyone thinks of it. Of the design. As for me, part of me thinks it looks modern and cool. Another part of me thinks the design looks like something out of a comic book. What do the rest of you think?

I don't mind it, it actually looks pretty cool. A nice break from the usual design...

I'm not a fan...I'll take the classic designs any day. That goes for UK and US coinage.

Looks like a low relief medalette. The Royal Mint will probably get away with it commercially as NCLT. Obviously produced to keep the sovereign series artistically active. I guess that has to be the way with NCLT.

It's not as hideous as the 2005 Sovereign, but I prefer the classic design (though did like the 2002 "wreath" design and the, sadly now vastly over-priced, 1989 medieval design). For the gold and silver Britannias, though, I like the way they tend to alternate the (gorgeous) classic design with a special design most years.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm going to pick one up for my type set if for no other reason.

I think it is an improvement to the series. I don't have much opinion on whether it is better than the same old design used for a long time, but variety is good, even if it is not better.

It is a one year design- fir LizII's Diamond Jubilee. They will return to the classic design in 2013.

I quite like it myself; a sort of modern design of the old George and Dragon.
Not that I can afford to collect Sovereigns these days.
Mike.

Here is the 2011 one.

Your-Thoughts-On-The-New-2012-Gold-Sovereign-Design?

In the 2012 one, you can tell better that rider is slaying a dragon and the weapon is actually capable of killing it.

Horse and rider are better on the standard design but how the heck is the rider going to slay the dragon while mounted with his sword?

No idea if I am going to purchase one, I am tempted to if circumstances allow me to.
