I don't know how slow usps is or any other countrys mail system is But Aussie post is deplorable. I posted an item in Geraldton to go to an address in Geraldton and it took 3 days. I have sent stuff to the states and it hasn't arrived yet all posted about the 17-18th dec. I am also still waiting for stuff from the states posted about the 20th dec. Yet I can get electronics and stuff from China and it is here in 5-7 days. The Chinese may be dodgy with their counterfit coins but they have a far superior mail system than us.

strangely I purchased a few items from china mid december, also some local items. the china stuff arrived quicker. 1 item brought from ebay arrived from china 2 days quicker than 2 items brought from the same warehouse 3 days before hand. mid year it seems to take 4-5 weeks every time from china for me.

Talking about Australian mail system, on the other side I find it, or used to find it quite accurate. I have a trade partner in the Australia and whenever he posts me something, it'll be there at sharp 15 days (workday or weekend). when I post him, it takes between 14-30 days to be delivered. I always use tracked mail and he sends via normal airmail. However, as of December 5, 2011, I was mailed something from Australia and it's been about a month and I am still and still waiting with little hope. Maybe this is a temporary thing with the Australian Mail, but other than that my experiences are always positive with it, and hope it'll be positive in the future too.

The Post has slowed down over the years. In the 1970's and '80's, things arrived from the U.K. into Australia in about 9 days, and the same in the reverse direction.
Is it possible to guess at the reason for this?

The reason is that it is part of the government. The government (at least here in the States) is too big and too focused on safety and upholding regulations. All of the resources are being put into silly projects like the TSA VIPR squads (look it up and gawk at its overwhelming unconstitutionality) and welfare programs. This leads to little funding for practical programs like the USPS. It loses about $8 Billion a year (of course, this is aided by electronic communications).
There are just to many regulations and too much mismanagement for the post to work smoothly and quickly like it did in the past. And it's only going to get worse.
And hopefully this post will still be here after the government passes SOPA.

I remember when UPS became a big thing in the States. They were killing the USPS b/c UPS could deliver faster and for a lot less in price. This is so typical of Yankee ingenuity/the American dream mindset vs. federally run systems. So rather than take note of how a good PO system should be run and use it to modify the federal system, the feds/bureaucrats(?) decided to do the thing that would save their scaly hides/powers and Congress passed laws that would make UPS have to raise their rates to the same as the PO. This is a very sad testament as to how things have been working in government for years. Personally I'd like to see out federal system fail and let the private systems take over. It would cost taxpayers less and have the job done even better. However, I also have to put a plug in for the overall system. I know that over the years I have heard a lot of non-US people say our system is the most reliable and safe. We do take this for granted.

I love those stories I read about someone in the USA getting a letter from someone in Europe during the WW2 and it just arrived lately. Back when film was used in cameras I found a place that did great work but was all done by mail. Usually it took 2 to 4 weeks from sending a roll to them and getting the prints back. One roll completely vanished and popped up in the mail several years later. My Son in Tennessee just got my Christmas Card and I sent it two weeks before Christmas. Such things happen all over the USA all the time. I always thought we all were just used to it all by now.

I share your pain trout, international delivery times are ridiculous. I've noticed though that its become worse over the past few years. When I first started ordering stuff off ebay (2005) from the US, it reliably took 7-10 business days. Now I'm lucky if it takes 15. They also fail to fathom the meaning of the word "delicate" on a parcel, they managed to break an item I got from the US as well as the replacement I ordered for it. Also added to that my local post office were a bunch off useless idiots, as they constantly lost my packages or failed to notify me when they arrived. So what ended up happening was they kept sending my packages back to the sender. They would also give me attitude when I showed up enquiring about the whereabouts of my deliveries. I remember one time when I went to inquire, the guy was shouting at me that he didnt know where my delivery was - but I insisted that he go check. Two minutes later he fund it under a pile of junk near the counter. That day I went down to another post office in my area, which was run by these really nice people and got a PO box there. I havent had any problems since, although the packages still take a while to arrive. So long story short, Australia post is terrible, and I mainly attributed it to them using contractors as opposed to staff who are more accountable.

My most anticipated wait for arrival through the Post?
Sent $750 to Spink's in London in about 1980, if I can remember.
What was I waiting for?
A gold stater of Philip 11 of Macedon (Alexander the Great's father), struck in Pella in about the year 373 BC. Apollo obv, biga rev., thunderbolt mint mark on rev., indicating Pella mint. Actually, the coin turned up (registered post), 8 days after they had received the mail order. Still have it. One of the stars of my collection!
