I'd love to put together some sort of pricing based on:
1) the scarcity of a note
2) it's serial (radar, repeater etc)
3) likelihood of still being around
But the old thing goes of what someone's prepared to pay for a note (or if noodling is the way they will find it)
I'll write something up in the morning at work.

All up to what people want to pay, or are willing to pay.

I may have an AN96 unc, but there is no way in heck it would even go close to one third the catalogue value.

ALL THE STATS BELOW ARE FOR 1996 $100 NOTES
As for an AN96 in UNC, here are some things that I think that might help. These are the things that I think about.
The scarcity factor:
JK96 - 242500 F$160 VF$275 EF$400 aUNC$525 UNC$875 Last Prefix
AN96 - 352000 F$245 VF$500 EF$1,000 aUNC$2,250 UNC$3,500 First Test Prefix

I wouldn't be paying more than a JK96 given the fact that there are a lot less JK96's out there than AN96. But apparently others will.

Some more stats are:
JK96 made up 0.2% of 1996's $100 note release
AN96 made up 0.3% of 1996's $100 note release

The 2011 Vort Report (took 5000 $100 notes) to work out that the 1996 $100 note (based on overall $100 not production) was 34.0% (normal notes) & 2.6% (test notes) in 2011.

So if we're looking at the stats for 1996 $100 Notes:
Overall 327.16 million notes have been produced & 212.34 million are circulating.

Of that 65% of circulating notes, the 2011 Vort Report would that there would be:
JK96 - 151,611 notes still circulating
AN96 - 17,115 notes circulating

Looking at that would make you realise that maybe (just) they are worth more than they should be worth.

Trevor Wilkins currently has:
JK96 VF $275
AN96 gVF $675
96 Test 8-Digit Radar VF $325
CS96 UNC $3,250
CS96 EF $950
Tell 'im he's dreamin'

You tell me. Personally I think a quarter to a third of the book price would be suffice. I know that they haven't sold well at any Downies Auction's in the last 3 years. (I was told by Downies a month back that you shouldn't pay more than a quarter of book price for polymer notes...this was whilst I was securing my first two UNC $50 JC98's)

I think your UNC AN96 would be worth $800-$1000 (but I wouldn't be paying that) I'd be paying more around the $500 mark in a pure UNC condition. But I'm not sure if it'd ever compare to my CS96 765567 ladder radar note in VF...I'm still a numbers man. It's all too much for me. I really need more money but to buy more money...too confusing.

*DISCLAIMER - This is all statistically based on the numbers that I have been given*

I bought a CS96 VF on ebay recently for $150 and having checked other completed listings that seems to be about the average price for a VF. Polymer notes never sell for anywhere near their book value.

(my hope is that they are "sleepers" )

If it's in good condition & you can afford to & if you like the numbers keep it.
The best thing about collecting from circulation is that you get it at face value & if something happens that you need money in a hurry you are'nt losing out if you have to spend them.
I had a heap of 1st & last prefixs of all denomination, ill health & my computer blowing up took over half of them,i was disappointed but I did'nt lose any money because I got them from circulation,a good emergency fund if you absolutely need it.

BTW it is a 3 digit repeater note,i'd definitely keep it if I found it as I like 7's.

Repeater serials are as common as radar serials which is around 1 in 1,100 notes.
The only problem is that not many people collect repeaters. People are moreso into radars.
Exactly as AppleAngel said, decent condition (EF or above keep it).
For radars generally I keep the majority to re-release into ebay or purchasing a better note. I find that it's a good way to save money. My best repeaters have been:

  • VF $20 AA05 271271 (which goes well with the next)

  • UNC $50 FA08 271271 & 271272 (consecutive)

  • EF/aUNC $50 BK08 131313

  • UNC $5 CJ06 565656

  • UNC $10 CH06 989898 (I purchased this one with a bunch of radars & near solids)

  • VF $10 CL06270627

So there's always going to be a broad mix of repeaters from 2-digits, 3-digits & 4-digits (4-digits are around 1 in 11,100 notes).

Even though polymer notes are less than 20 years old there are already some "key dates" or more accurately some key prefixes.

Here are some to look out for in your change

$5 KC 95 (last prefix) book value $380 in Fine
$5 AN 97 (first prefix test note) book value $550 in Fine
$10 DF 97 (last prefix) book value $550 in Fine
$20 PE 94 (last prefix) book value $800 in Fine
$50 VG 95 (last prefix) book value $250 in Fine
$100 CF 98 (last prefix) book value $245 in Fine

Keep an eye out for these in your wallet because even if you only get half the book value on ebay thats still a handsome profit.

If you like the note, hold it but if not put it back as when I had mine looked at the other day they said nothing except the one's that looked mint but then he said they're too young so maybe in 20 years if I can keep them looking good but I can't see them lasting me that long
