I have simply entered (say) $20 for each of 5 items that I bought for a $100. Sometimes it is laziness, othertimes I have had a terrific deal for a bulk lot. Overall my database totals exactly what I have paid for everything, but not necessarily for individual items.

You simply need another column for current market value, or even columns for each year.

Then you have both cost and replacement value.

I've actually had two Barcelona $1 come through the shop over the past three years. I ended up selling them on ebay for between $15-$20. It's amazing what sometimes comes through the till. I've got a friend who got a $2 coin years ago which she kept. It was a 1988 $2 silver proof (rubbed & knocked good & proper from circulation). Always odd how far & how some of these coins escape.
