LOL I have watched him shopping at the Baltimore Expo's, he has no worries about any competition from me. Somewhere I have a pic of he, myself, and CoinZip Alan at Balto.

I totally understand... from what I've seen, he has a killer collection. You'll have to post the picture. It's always nice to put the face to the names

Quote: Aaron (CheetahCats), do you still own that NGC graded MS66BN Aschermann token (WI510A-1a)? I'm just curious, as I purchased an MS65RB NGC example in yesterday's Steve Hayden Auction. It seems the MS66BN example you have posted on NovaNumismatics is the highest graded example of that token, with three others graded MS65RB. I paid through the nose for the example in yesterday's auction (ex Steve Tanenbaum), but I haven't been able to find another example of this token to purchase in the AU or lower range that I found attractive for over 2 years. PS, great write up on the history of that token in December 2012!
-Brandon Yes. The MS-66 Aschermann token is indeed still in the bank vault. From what I understood at the time I acquired it, no other Aschermann token of that variety (WI510A-1a) existed which equals or is higher. I obtained that information from Ernie Latter. As to your specimen, I see what you paid. Despite the amount, I think you obtained a very nice price. Congrats to you! p.s. thanks for the kind words about the writeup. I hope it helped. My site always gets hammered just before big auctions. LOL.

Bill - I don't think any photos were taken the day you and I met up with Paddy for lunch. I think the photo you're thinking of with CoinZip was with you, Paddy, and CoinZip from the March 2013 show. As to Bill's comments -- likewise, I have observed him at the shows too. Quite impressive, Bill is extremely organized and manages his acquisitions using a highly-complex spreadsheet system. $10 bucks says Bill was a CPA tax accountant in a previous incarnation. LOL.

They have graded only 12 pieces total, and the other 11 are in the following grades by NGC: 3 in MS65RB (the only RB examples graded) 2 in MS65BN 1 in MS64BN 1 in MS63BN 1 in AU58BN 2 in AU55BN 1 in AU50BN Given that it's an R5, and I've been looking for over 2+ years -- I caved and acquired an 65RB piece. I will be sure to post my pictures when it arrives in hand. The Hayden pics are notoriously a little grainy in the large images. -Brandon PS -- I'm sure you have a waiting list / line of people asking about the Aschermann, but if you ever decide to part with the NGC 66 specimen, please let me know!

CC you are correct it was Paddy. No I'm not a CPA but I am married to one. And that in itself creates issues for a coin collector! LOL (you paid what for that?)

This token arrived today. I purchased it in the June 2, 2013 Steve Hayden online auction. I paid a very strong price for it, but it's not a token that comes up in this condition very often. The NGC population includes only 12 examples, among those one in MS66BN, and three in MS65RB. I don't know where the other two 65RB examples are, but I have a hard time believing they would challenge the eye appeal of this one. The token is rated R-5 by Fuld, with 76-200 examples estimated extant. I have seen about a dozen in the VF-XF range on ebay over the past 2.5 years. The MS66BN example is in strong hands (CheetahCats!), and likely there for a long while. Given that I had searched for an eye appealing example of this token for well over 2 years, I bid strong to make this one mine. I usually don't care too much about pedigrees, but this token comes from the former Stephen Tanenbaum personal collection; who, for those of you CWT collectors out there, the guy was a legend. A very nice write up on the history of the token was written in December 2012 by Aaron Packard (again, this is CheetahCats!) on the NovaNumismatics website, and I have included that in my description of the piece in my horses set here: https://coins.www.collectors-societ...px?sc=235734. Aaron, I hope that's okay by you...I didn't feel the need to re-invent the wheel since you wrote such a thorough and beautiful history already. My pictures follow below...

brg5658, All I can say is WOW! . A 5-drool rating! Absolutely beautiful... and the toning is out of this world. I don't blame you for paying top dollar for it! I have also been watching for this one on the "Bay, and I agree, there aren't very many, and all in lower condition. Congrats!

On the Army and Navy tokens where it says, "it must and shall be preserved", are there many examples of where the "be" instead says "by" errors out there? " it must and shall by preserved".

For those interested in pursuing Civil War tokens.. Go to Amazon or some other site and buy the books first! This cannot be stressed more!
