Found this on the 'bay. Seller claims he took it to the local coin shop, and they believe it to be a proof strike! Image: buffy.jpg40.82 KB Image: buffyrev.jpg40.44 KB Edited by hadleydog 01/23/2007 01:50 am

Looks to be an automotive finish? Is there a special holder designation for that?

Oooooooohhhhh.....preeeetttttyyy. I love how the light reflects off of Liberty's cheek. I think it needs a bit more polishing though to really get those mirrors going stronger on her face.

Another hundred years of circulation would fix that right up.

Hey, maybe they rubbed these with mercury. My father in law tells me that as a boy they use to take copper cents and rub them with mercury and they would turn mirror like silver. This may be why he glows in the dark, too. Jim

For the benefit of our new collectors, this is how we know this coin is definitely polished and not a "proof strike".
First of all, the devices are all as equally shined as the fields. In a proof strike, there will be at least slight frosting on a Morgan. Granted, there are some proof coins that I've seen that have no frosting at all, but there would not be duller areas in the crevices of the design.
If you look at the stars, lettering, and date, you will see how dull the field is around these points. This is because it is not possible to polish a coin evenly through these areas. This is probably the easiest way to tell a polished or cleaned coin.
One other thing to look at is the design details. On this coin, the eagle's breast feathers are obviously worn. With a proof strike, the details are more pronounced, not less. This is because a proof coin is struck multiple times. The feather detail on this coin has been rubbed off with the polishing.

I would send it to Pimp My Ride. They could use it as a side mirror. Gusp
