Hi folks, I became interested in the coins of Newfoundland after reading some great threads on this forum and have just started my collection. Today I came across an 1880 cent and learned that there are 3 varieties of this coin. To my eye this appears to be an Oval 0 comparing it to other pictures but I lack the hands on experience to be able to say for sure. What do you think? Sorry for the poor image! Will try to upload a better one tonight. I've added a new image, thanks for replies so far! Edited by sgireland 03/07/2012 6:05 pm

Yes, closer pictures would help. I believe it could be one, but we'll have to wait for the real experts to arrive.

Hi, sgireland, Welcome to the Forums. to answer your question on your coin your pics have to be larger and also try to get a close up of the date. It looks like it may be an 'oval' O, but can't really tell. Enjoy the forums.

Looks like I didn't properly welcome you yet, . Congrats (or as we say here, coingrats), I do believe you have an oval 0 variety. Looks like you got it for cheap too. If you could post image of the other side, we can grade it and value it.

Thanks again, I paid about $2 for it with another coin and a book and didn't even know about the 0 variety until I got home. Based on my grading guide I figure it's about a VG-8. The coin looks better in person as it's being photographed through the celophane in the cardboard holder. Here is a shot of both sides : So, is it official, did I find a scarce coin?

Thanks for the analysis. I think the thing to do is send it to ICCS to get the Oval 0 confirmed and get an "official" grade.
I'm not likely to sell it as am going to try to complete a Newfoundland set and this gets me off to a good start.
Again, I really appreciate your input.
Cheers,
Steve
