"1909-S VDB PCGS MS66BN Lincoln Wheat cent HI END BUY ME TOP POP 4 NONE FINER"
coin sold 3/19 for $4,388.00
http://www.ebay.com/itm/22097239597....m1438.l2649

"1909-S VDB 1c PCGS/CAC MS66 RD OGH Lincoln Cent"
current bid, 5+ days to go: $14,301.00
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...190653927922

A $10,000.00 (at least) difference for the same grade.

I'm interested in hearing opinions on the two coins and the bidding.

Those two coins do not exactly have the same grade, one is designated BROWN while the other is designated RED. The color will always lead to a huge difference in value for the early wheaties(and IHCs, Large Cents, etc).
The seller claims that the Brown coin is a "top pop, none finer" but that is a bit misleading since it only applies to BROWN 1909-S VDBs while Red examples are known in MS67.

Is it really that hard to find recent cents in gem grades?

This 2010-D MS66RD is already up to $74 right now. By contrast, this 1995 doubled die in MS67RD just sold for $75. For a desirable (if relatively common) doubled die! In 67RD! Vs. a completely ordinary shield cent...

That coin is not part of the Presidential Registry collection though, it is just a coin DLRC is selling

I am sure this is going to be the crown jewel from this collection http://www.ebay.com/itm/1909-S-VDB-...em2c63dc11f2

Oops! I didn't see this one, looks like it may be the crown jewel in the collection http://www.ebay.com/itm/1955-1955-1...em2c63dc12c1
It seems there are 7 coins in the collection that already has higher bids than the 1909-S VDB that I at first thought would be the crown jewel

Hard to believe the 1955 DD is selling for much more than the red 1909S VDB.

yeah at first I thought the 1909-S VDB would be the one everyone wanted but it seems all the DD's in the collection has higher bids then the 1909-SVDB has right now. I can't believe the others that have higher bids than the 09-S also, here is the list from Highest Bid to Lowest Bid and there are quite a few that I wouldn't have ever imagined would bring more than the "key" coin would bring

The thing I find even harder to believe is that reserve has still not been met, at nearly $26,500!

Curious about the motivation for ebay ... however .

I believe they will get tons of traffic and lots of exposure as well as increase in reputation, beside the 12% cut of this multimillion dollar event. Think of Stack/Christie and other major auction house's reputation, that's what they are hoping for or want to get there.... With the success of this event, they will be able to bring in more larger auction event.

I see one large gash under "E" in STATES of the reverse of this MS67RD coin (beside the smaller one on the lower steps of the memorial): http://www.ebay.com/itm/1982-D-1c-P...m2a1b15dad4, which I didn't see on other coin in similar grade..... any thought?

Undoubtedly!

Even though these items are well beyond my budget, I can still enjoy the frenzy as a spectator.

That is crazy to be graded as a 67 with a huge gash on the reverse like that. I think it should be a 64.
