I'm a newbie. I just bought a few rolls from the bank today. I have a bunch of quarters (like 1973 and 1978) with no mint marks. What's the deal with that?
Quote: San Fransisco mint was not minting coins between 1955 - 1967[
San Francisco began coining in 1965 and struck cents through halves in 65 and 66 and cents through quarters in 67. All of these were struck with no mintmarks.
Quote: FYI .. all 1965, 1966 and 1967 coins did not have mint marks .. even those made at Denver mint
And that includes coins that were minted at West Point during those years. The low mintage of SF and WP coins is one of the reasons that mint marks were not used. The mint did not want the coins to be collected, they wanted them to circulate.
