Either a fake or a doubling on the period following V.
Who am I kidding, no way anything is legit.

Quote: Here is another identical roll from the same seller...but do yourselves a favor and look at the "V.D.B." image fourth from the left. Notice the pitted surface of the coin...these are fakes...it is very obvious! I'm a newbie, could you explain? Is this evidence of sand casting or something of that effect?

Quote: Markn, I think Coppercoins would know for sure. Did banks even use paper rolls in 1909? The printing/style is not that old, it looks more like 40s-50s to me--maybe that's what's inside? From my research, the Fed didn't really start rolling coins until the 1940's, and only did so through the 1960's. I always welcome comments from coppercoins, and treat such as gospel.

Quote: It's not hard to predict how this will end...the winning bidder will open their package, and their heart will sink when they discover 2 1909-VDBs and a bunch of junk cents in the middle--these negs say it all. Sadly, that's probably only 1% of the buyers of these rolls. I think most are in denial, the rest are two embarrassed to admit they were taken, resulting in positive feedback of "Great, thanks."

The pitted surface indicates a manufacturing process that at the very least doesn't apply the same level of pressure actually mint presses apply. Coins in that "new"of a condition would have a very different finish and lustre to them....just look at any new cent in your pocket and you will see what I mean

Correct me if I am wrong...but weren't the first 1-20 years of cents rolled in $0.25 rolls and not $0.50?
Second....seems a little too perfect even 'sitting in a vault for 20+ years' to me.

Im new here but have been reading the forum for a little bit and just got into coin collecting in the last year or so. To add my Two Cents to this this has to be fake and I would assume that he is breaking ebay rules with it. If nothing else hes intentionally trying to deceive people. He probably doesn't have more negative feed back because a lot of people probably dont know what they really bought and think all the coins in the roll are worth money. Just the sheer volume of them that hes selling indicates that they have to be frauds. At best he got a few real rolls and split them up into a bunch of the deceptive rolls. It looks like hes sold some in the past as well as has a listing for that roll and one with a lot of ten rolls. Unless his family owns/owned a bank in California I just dont see how it would be possible to get that many or why if you had such an impressive collection you would be selling it on ebay like that. Even the huge penny auction got press from ebay. Just seems like you would have herd about it somewhere other than his individual listings

The US Mint still doesn't know what denominations they're producing.

I think 100 years ago the coins were in canvas bags and not rolls ! The wrapper is probably original but I dont think its been rolled in 1909 , pennies in old rolls jusg turn almost black tonned over the years and his coins dont look to be enders for more then couple months ! ebay scam no doubt about it or you think someone would sell a roll of 1909svdb ms coins that cheap ? Some people just ask to catch by these scams

Another classic "make your own rolls" seller. If you look through his feedback far enough, you'll probably find the date when he bought a hand-crimper on ebay and then a few days later the first rolls started appearing. The VDB end coins look genuine to me, that's how they look. However, I guarantee there's no SVDB in those rolls. They are just like they look, VDB's on both ends with common date junk inbetween. CLASSIC ebay SUCKER PLOY!

I'm not trying to defend the seller, because we all here know it is a seeded roll. And yes he is using ebays rules to his advantage to sucker in more money from his unsuspecting customers But ebay will view it differently. What the seller claims is that it is an "AN ORIGINAL BANK WRAPPED ROLL FROM THE "FEDERAL RESERVE BANK OF SAN FRANCISCO". He doesn't state they will all be a BU roll. Who is to say it wasn't rolled by the Fed reserve in San Fran. It could have been rolled in 1950. And there is absolutely no way to disprove this. So ebay won't remove the listing.

Just out of curiosity has anyone thought to use the ask the seller a question feature? Any response is right there on the page. In small print under his huge description, but at least it is there.
