I have only ever found 3 1985 in many thousands of 50c coins. They are much scarcer than 1993 IMO even though they have the same mintage. Finding three in $1000 is a very very good effort!

After seeing the number bjw found in more than double the coins I checked, and having got none in my last round, I was also very pleased.

The 85's apparent scarcity is quite possibly aided by;
first year of Maklouf obverse for type collectors
first low mintage release before the drought, reinforcing its scarcity
As it was the last COA for 8 years, and with a new obverse to aid quick identification, I suspect a great many of the "newer" looking COAs disappeared quite rapidly once mintage figures became known.

In my noodlings I've found 2 x 1993 but I'm yet to find a 1985.
Judging by the figures here it will be a while before I do find one

Your explanation as to the 1985s scarcity is probably fairly accurate. I checked and I have actually foubd 4 of them. 1 I sold and 1 is about the most corroded 50c I have ever come accross. I only have two good ones.

Congrats ozcoins! You already know this, but...
(or should that be, we LOVE pics)

@MobOfRoos if I can find 2 1991 Rams heads, then I'm sure you can find an 85 - I'm hoping you're visiting a bank sometime soon hehehe

I don't think it's cheating, I'm just too lazy and my eyes can't hack looking at 1000's of coins at a time.
Anyway that leaves more in the pond for yous blokes
