OK folks - here it is again:

How about the hint ... number?

OK - let's tackle this one:

L. A coin was sold for $10 plus half of its price. What was the price of the coin?

Two scenarios.
Number 1 = impossible to tell:
10.00 + 1/2 coin price = Price sold for

so...... 1/2coin price = Price sold for - 10.00

Multiply both sides by 2 to isolate the coins price (c):

coin price = 2 (Price sold for -10.00)

Here is a legitimate algebraic answer, however, since the situation represents a situation where the number of variable is more than the number of equations, it is impossible to solve and get a single numeric answer. In other words, any coin price would give a different price sold for.

Number 2: - possible, but an assumption based on poor wording. It must be assumed the wording "a coin was sold for" refers to amount as the words, "half of its price"

in which case:
Price sold for = 10.00 + 1/2 Price sold for
or
P = 10 + 1/2 P

Isolate P by subtracting 1/2 P from both sides:
1/2P = 10.00

Multiply both sides by 2 to solve for P
P = 20.00

IF this is the case of the wording (not sure what else it would be) then the price was 20.00.

Sorry I wrote it all out - but I was figuring through it on the way instead of using paper!

The assumption was simple here - the coin was sold for its price!

Which means $10 represents (the other) half of it. So the whole price is $10 x 2 =$20.

A. Cajun, Steve and Moe are sitting around a bonfire and arguing who of them is the smartest. Jbuck happened to pass by and heard the conversation. He said, in my bag I have white and black hats, I'm going to put one on each of you so that you can see only your opponents' hats. I promise that at least one hat will be white. Whoever first figures out what color hat (s)he wears would be the smartest.

He put white hats on all three and left.

After staring at each others' heads for a minute Cajunlady exclaimed, my hat is white! How did she figure it out?

C saw two white hats, S saw two white hats, M saw two white hats. C figured that if she had a black hat, S and M would see one of each and realize their hat had to be white. Since they didn't, her hat had to be white.

How can this happen?

It can't tortoises can't talk.
