I think a lot of the cash transactions they cant keep track of are illegal, drugs , stolen property etc.
I think a cashless system would work....
For about three seconds and then the crooks would come up with a work around.

Hi I am Penny4Me near Detroit, MI USA....
I been collecting the Canada penny since I was a kid back in 1966.
It was easy in past to find Canada pennies in my change since Windsor, ON is just across river,
but in last 5 years finding Canada pennies in change has been hard to do.
>There are reports/post here on CCF that both 2012 Magnetic/steel AND Non-Mag/Zinc One cent coins are out there! I need two of each 2012 Magnetic/steel AND Non-Mag/Zinc One cent coins to finish up penny folders since this is last year.
Can someone here help me get these final 2012 Canada pennies?

Where I work, all vending machines will be converted to cashless in the coming months. This alone will reduce our expenses, eliminate vandalism, and all the risk associated with handling of cash.

That is awesome to hear. I hope it continues to spread. I haven't seen any in central NC at all. I would imagine it would cut down on money theft.

Where are you located?

I was just sitting here thinking........
We can keep using the USA penny
If we buy them on the right day we can get a 100 of them for less then a loony.
We save money and help our southern neighbors with their slow and eventual take over of Canada.

That vending machine idea doesn't make that much sense. Sure, it reduces crimes of opportunity, but increases organized crime. Haven't you heard of people stealing data from debit/credit card machines? It's quite popular don't you know.

Ya, Canada people may start coming over to USA to get your pennies to use for their business/stores,
This will force USA to stop penny here... Because US will be making cents at 1-1/2 ~ 2 cent each to feed Canada

Doesn't make sense? Oh well.

Speaking of organized crime, cash (and not debit card) is the perfect vehicle for all kinds of illicit activities, which we will not spell out for you on this forum.

---One thing you said about Pepsi. I have seen 7 cent Coke machines in the 60's

True, but once they hit the forth lowest denomination, cents were out of the picture. The only multi-coin mech that I know of that accepts cents is USPS, and they don't give them in change, IIRC.

Starting in the fall, businesses will be asked to return pennies to financial institutions. The coins will be melted and the metal content recycled.

That does seem strange. Make a coin until July, then ask for them back in August. I could see stop making them, stop handing them out, and let nature take its course.

I predict that if the May- or Maynot- an calendar isn't correct, by January 2013, Canadian cents will be in collections, piled in dresser drawers and used by a few diehard businesses to promote that they're not rounding up.

And talk about rounding up. What happened to the nickel machines, where you get a gumball? Now they are a quarter and have been for many, many years and kids still use them.

The wholesale price on those large (hollow) gumballs is 2-3¢. How do you think they pay for those fancy machines that put on a show and sell for $1000?

You know those gum machines that say a portion of sales go to a named charity? Great racket. The charity gets a buck for the decal, and that's the end of their "portion".

Does this mean Canadians are going to come to the USA and start getting boxes of cents to use in Canada, if that is even possible to do? I know Canadian cents are used here, so I would think US cents were used in Canada?

There might be a little bit of that, but it's illegal to export over $5 in cents, under the same law that makes it illegal to melt them.

Why would people go to that effort to save 1 or 2 cents on the 40% of their cash transactions that get rounded up?

same reason they drive across town to save a quarter on a tank of gas.

The ones screaming about rounding up give scenarios of Three Cents lost on a 87¢ item. The reality is you might have four $20+ transactions in a day, and pay (at worst) a dime more if you don't use a check or plastic. That's one eighth of 1%.

@canadian_coins: Sure, cash is the most popular of vehicles to conduct illegal activities, but don't pretend that all others are immune. I know how to spell, thanks.
