Is This Japanese Coin Worth Something?

pls Rest in Peace United States 1729 Posts	Posted 03/29/2012 11:40 pm If I'm reading the characters correctly ... Showa 15, or 1940, and the coin is 1 sen. Worth maybe a quarter in that condition. ZiggyZ Valued Member United States 162 Posts	Posted 03/29/2012 11:58 pm The thing that looks like a 5 is one of the characters indicating the Taisho era. It tripped me up for a second too. I'm not used to seeing that character, since basically all my Japanese coins are Showa. Edit: Unless you meant the character to the left of the 10, since dates this early are read right to left. svslav Pillar of the Community United States 2605 Posts	Posted 03/30/2012 12:11 am Concurring Taisho 10. There's no "5" character there, two characters to the right of 10 indicate Taisho era. In addition there was no sen coins struck in Taisho 15. Report this Post to the Staff
