Good advice, timsumrall.
I've been working on this set for over 30 years. I might as well do it right.

1909-S-VDB-Acquistion.-Concern-About-Authenticity

Here is the coin that I ended up purchasing. It is an NGC XF45BN. I love the wood grain effect. I couldn't be more happy with it.

I would never buy a key date coin raw, I would stick to buying it slabbed to avoid being hosed

I agree. I really like the wood grain effect as well.

As I don't know the coin dealer you went to for the initial coin, I cannot say this for sure, but I think I would be pretty hesitant to purchase anything from him in the future.

If I was a coin dealer I would think I would pay to have the 09s slabbed before I sold it, just because you could ask more for the coin. To me the only reason not to would be if you thought it was a fake.

Anyway, alls well that ends well. You got a BEAUTIFUL coin and you didn't get stuck with a fake.

Did I mention

And one of the reasons why almost all high priced (5-6 figures or more) coins these days, when going up for auction, are slabbed. I think the 1914-D cent is the only coin that is more counterfeited than the 1909-S VDB. There are tens of thousands or more of those 2 coins counterfeited and there are some very convincing ones that can fool most people too.

My face hurts. I can't stop grinning!
I am still working on the pictures. These are a little lighter than the coin, but they show off the features very well.

Thanks, Wquin. NOW I have to check my 14-D!
LOL, isn't this fun?

Nice woody! Reminds me of my dad's 1960 something Ford.

Seriously, that is one awesome coin! Is that drool on the slab or is it on my monitor...

Steve, I would quote General Chang, "You have a singular wit, Doctor".

Does this post make me a nerd?
It sounds better in the original Klingon.
