I would like to amend one of my last statements. Eye appeal is critical in this case. I will probably crack it out of the case anyway so I can put it with the set my dad gave me. If I find a details coin that meets that criteria, then there is no reason not to consider it. There are too many cases where you see nice pics of the slab with this little brown spot in the middle. I want to see the coin! As so many people have said in the past, it's the coin, stupid.

That is one amazing fake. Glad to hear you got your money back. It was very educational for me too. Quote:
That's very cool indeed! Just make sure to save the slab insert to prove authenticity if you ever plan to sell it...which I know you won't do anytime soon I don't understand why people think this, and I have seen it several times, but since it isn't in the slab, having a piece of paper proves nothing at all. I would never buy it, if someone told me that. Once you remove it from the slab, that grade means nothing, since it could have gotten some damage or wear, or maybe even replaced, either accidently or on purpose.

Save just a bit more and get an XF. You're too close not too. Slow pressure makes diamonds. Hold out.

Good advice, timsumrall. I've been working on this set for over 30 years. I might as well do it right.

Here is the coin that I ended up purchasing. It is an NGC XF45BN. I love the wood grain effect. I couldn't be more happy with it.

I would never buy a key date coin raw, I would stick to buying it slabbed to avoid being hosed

And one of the reasons why almost all high priced (5-6 figures or more) coins these days, when going up for auction, are slabbed. I think the 1914-D cent is the only coin that is more counterfeited than the 1909-S VDB. There are tens of thousands or more of those 2 coins counterfeited and there are some very convincing ones that can fool most people too.

My face hurts. I can't stop grinning! I am still working on the pictures. These are a little lighter than the coin, but they show off the features very well.
Thanks, Wquin. NOW I have to check my 14-D! LOL, isn't this fun?

It looks great except that the mint mark.... .... .... .... is perfectly fine. :-) Congrats on a good purchase.

Nice woody! Reminds me of my dad's 1960 something Ford. Seriously, that is one awesome coin! Is that drool on the slab or is it on my monitor...

Steve, I would quote General Chang, "You have a singular wit, Doctor". Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
Does this post make me a nerd? It sounds better in the original Klingon.
