Quote: But what if silver stays that low It all depends on your investment time horizon and the state of our economy. Obviously, if you know you need the cash soon, it's a very valid concern. IMHO, there are only a couple of basic scenarios that could explain a protracted collapse in silver (and PMs in general): The first possibility is a return to sound fiscal and monetary policy both here in North America and around the world. The likelihood of this happening seems, um, remote. The second possibility is a dramatic increase in the kind of overt market interference that allegedly has been keeping silver and the other PMs from trading at their true potential price levels. This seems more plausible to me. However, I don't see how much worse things can get for Ag. If the big players overreach much further, they risk intervention (however reluctantly) from regulators. And too much unwanted news and media attention could bring the whole game crashing down. Additionally, even at relatively flat pricing, silver still has big value for people looking for an inflation hedge or who are becoming less confident in their fiat-based nest egg. And, as it's been pointed out elsewhere, there's no shortage of demand in Asia and the rest of the world. Unless the truly meaningful economic indicators improve, I wouldn't count on silver staying down for long.

What if it does? I would just suggest not dumping your whole wad in one transaction. I was going to buy another box of SAE but decided it would be smarter to make several smaller orders over the next 6 months to a year to minimize the downside potential. I just took delivery of another 50 oz with another 46 on the way. I think silver is a great buy right now and am happy to be over 1000 oz again. Gold might be a safer bet but I like a little risk with my morning wheaties :)

So silver and gold are really good investments now. I started to buy silver at around $30 an oz But the silver I buy has numistmatic value too. Ill try to keep adding a few ounces here and there, maybe some gold too. Heck I might add some 5oz bars too.

Quote: If the big players overreach much further, they risk intervention (however reluctantly) from regulators. And too much unwanted news and media attention could bring the whole game crashing down. You know, CW, I keep think that too yet the game they are playing just seems to stretch and stretch. The Keystone Cops at the CFTC just seem to be completely unable to discover that which is right under their noses. In cases like this it is often a matter of 'we don't know and we don't want to know'. Quote: And too much unwanted news and media attention could bring the whole game crashing down. Not a big problem if one owns or can strongly influence the media. These days, the media seems to decide what is or is not news and their reasons for their decisions are often less than clear. Quote: And, as it's been pointed out elsewhere, there's no shortage of demand in Asia and the rest of the world. OK, here's the biggie in all this. As these 'crash the PM price' games go on, very smart people in Asia and elsewhere are loading up on relatively cheap PMs. With their young and rapidly growing economies, they have a lot of paper currency that they have earned via exporting their products. Diversifying out of these currencies, especially the US dollar, makes good financial sense. Also, as Asian and other countries central banks and citizens continue to buy PMs that are price suppressed, I can see a migration of PMs from west to east and from north to south. If we eventually do end up with a new world reserve currency it is likely that such a currency would be based at least in part on PMs. Those who are holding PMs when that time arrives will be very glad that they do. Those holding paper? Not so much.

Colonial Acres just came up with 50 of them in stock.
Where did all these brand new factory sealed bars come from? JM re-opened?
Edit: SilverGoldBull has it as well. $2.25 over spot ends today.

From Goldmart:
Due to popular demand, the 1 oz Johnson Matthey Silver Bar is back in production! These bars will be available for a limited time as long as Johnson Matthey continues to mint them. In the past, despite popularity and demand Johnson Matthey has started and stopped production of their 1 oz silver bars on several occasions.

Thanks, Hobbes. No wonder they are everywhere all of a sudden. I'm sure the serials will reveal their modern identity. From what I saw, it seems all these have serials start with letter A followed by 6 digits. And depends on the mintage, the premium can be limited. Thoughts?

I'm looking at these as possible additions to my silver collection because they are attractive, from an excellent manufacturer, and well priced. I don't know a thing about their "collector value", if any, and don't really care about that. The premium seems quite reasonable for a quality silver bar and is in the $1.50-2.25 range at most vendors, depending upon the quantity purchased.

APMEX has these 1.49 over spot with free shipping over $3000. I agree these are not what I consider collectible, but at less than 5% over spot for .999 silver bars from a great manufacturer, you cannot go wrong.

@Amaths you are correct these new bars will start with a A followed by the serial number. Good for us JM collectors. At these prices these bars are a no brainer, as JM is a top refinery and has been for along time

I only bought 11. I just really like the 10's better but for the price these seemed like a no-brainer to me to, good buy nobis

Quote:You didn't pull the trigger on these, yet, Ed? What's the holdup? No, not yet. I guess that the "hold up" is that at one oz. each, they are rather small and unimpressive. Yeah, I know, I shouldn't let that stop me. Maybe more to the point is that if these are back in production, there is probably no rush to acquire them. That plus those VF grade Morgans keep nagging at me. Decisions, decisions!
