So what do you guys do with the copper you've saved ? Just hoard it or try and sell it on ebay ? I'm trying to figure out if it's worth separating from the zincs. Thanks !

Sitting on a few hundred dollars + right now in copper cents, and counting. Just letting it pile up; not sure what I am going to do with it, if anything.

Too bad we can't sell it for melt. Probably double our money. I'm not sure but I think there are around 150 pennies to a pound and melt is somewhere around 3 bucks or so.

Its still illegal to melt copper 1c and 2c coins in Australia but I have found a couple dodgy metal scrap dealers who pay $6.10 per kg for copper coins. There is about $3.70 in face per kg which still leaves $2.40 profit for me. Ask around and try and find a dodgy dealer to sell to.

Save copper wire. It's pure. No refining costs. Far fewer people save copper wire, and can be obtained for much less, or if you are a roadside shopper, for free!

When I was a kid with no income, I made quite a lot of pocket money, enough to kick start my coin collection! Fortunately, I also knew a scrap metal merchant.

How do you work this? Woulnd't it just kill the buyer with shipping fees with such a weight to it?
I havent really been keeping pennies until recently. I'm not sure what to do with them but I guess I'm waiting for the go a head to melt. Not that I will have a lot of them but I guess something is better than nothing.

@samsnate

shipping cost for this is usually $10.50 in a medium flat rate box you can fit 3 I beleive.. 70lb weight limit...

$50, 2 boxes is about 34 lbs... its actually better for you to sell 3 boxes, that way buyers get more for their money..

if they only bought one box, then it would still be the same shipping cost...

i charge about $10.75 for shipping.. I've seen a few $50 lots go for around $80... its profit

and if you roll search a lot and get a lot of copper then you can probably get 1 box/week,,

@SD coin guy. I see. Makes sence where you are I guess. I don't know what shipping around here in central ontario canada would be like. You guys seem to always have better rates.

I separate the wheaties and the BU coins for collecting, and just keep sticking the rest of the copper in this huge jar. I don't know how much is in there, but the jar is 11" in diameter and the coins are 8" deep. $500? $1,000? I have no idea. Any math whizes out there?

Oh bummer... decided after all these years to actually calculate that. The volume of the cylinder is based on a radius of 5.5 inches and a height of 8 inches, or 760.55 cubic inches. The volume of a penny is based on a radius of 0.375 inches and a thickness of 0.05 inches, or 0.022 cubic inches. So .022 divided into 760.55 equals 34,570 pennies. Or $345.70. If I did that right, I'm much poorer than I thought!
