Here are the reasons for asking:
1. The maple leaf penny production has ended after 75 years
2. The Fifty Cent Piece is not common
3. The Lonnie has changed its look after 25 years of production.
4. The toonie has also changed its look after about 15 years

Another question: Is the mint going to send me the new loonies and toonies or the old loonies and toonies?

Other than that, do you think that the price is fair, compared to the other years?

I am sure they will be the "old" 2012 loonie and toonie. I don't know if they will make a 2012 set with the new steel ones. I somehow doubt they will.

I would get it, but then again I already did!

I think I will be picking up the 2012 uncirculated set for all of these reasons. For 24$ I consider it a sound investment.

Want to bet a beer against me on that statement? The coins in those sets, like the 2011 sets, are business strikes produced in Winnipeg. They will not hold their value at all, and if you cut one up, you don't have proof-like singles anymore - you have pocket change. I would think that the 2010 sets would carry a better premium in the long run, they were struck in Ottawa with mirror finishes and represent the last true "proof-like" coins struck by the mint (even the Charlton Catalogue commented on it).

Yes, 2012.
How's the price compared to the past?
Are my reasons reasonable?

I received an email from the RCM a few days ago advertizing the 2012 uncirculated set...

The email also advertized a special edition of the 2012 uncirculated set including three 1 dollar pieces. There was no other information about the other coins.

Release date: September 4th
Price: $14.95

75,000 "uncirculated" sets were put for sale. Do you honestly think there will be that many people interested on this "keepsake."

For 23 bucks, you will get 3.91 bucks in (circulation) coins plus the packaging. The coins are not special in any way -- just circulation coins, struck in Winnipeg and shipped to the packaging facility -- because of all the manipulation, odds are, they are lower in grade than the average coin coming from a roll.

If you really want the set, wait 2 or 3 years and buy them in the after-market for 5 to 10 bucks a pop.
