Pics are to small to accurately grade and determine authenticity.

Back in the late 50's (I'm old) I had found 8 1909s vdb's and had them in a safe place (I thought). But in the mid-60's while I was in the service they disappeared along with my vintage comic books, baseball cards(Mantle rookie card) (the cards were from 1954 through 1962), camping equipment, scouting gear, coin collection, and various assundry items of a personal nature.

My mom decided to clear out all my stuff that "I wasn't using anymore and had no value". As I recall the 1909s-vdb's were in good condition.

No way to verify authenticity from the given photos. It looks to have been cleaned, that's all I can tell.

Throwing away your childhood collections is how moms get even.

HEY Everyone..........Disappointing News....Took this coin to a highly reputable coin dealer here and 4 coin experts including the owner of the bussiness looked it over. According to them the coin is a fake. The "s" and the "V" are wrong. According to the it would be a waste of my money to have it graded or authendicated. What a drag....thought maybe I had actually found something worthwhile.

Wow L! I am so sorry. I'd like to find the counterfeiter and change their S and V for you!

Commiserations L Reynolds - as I have said before, the amount of fakes in numismatics is so depressing.

Sorry to hear, but that's what I expected. People popup all the time with S VDB's and 99+% of the time they are fake. AFAIK, it's the most widely faked US coin. Do your fellow collectors a favor, cut that coin in half and throw it away so nobody else can use it.

Another tip, when you see one of these harshly cleaned, that's a tip-off that it's also fake. They clean them so they can glue the S on there securely.....although I've seen people retone them too....but the toning never looks quite right.

That is such a bummer. I remember reading your first post about the discovery you made and I was hopeful that there would be a happy ending. Like others said, It is the most commonly counterfeited US coin.
