The steel cents have a shiny finish, whilst the zinc coins has a slight hazy look about them. Is this normal?

@triggersmob: This haziness sounds like what I'm looking at now with this thread in the grading forum on 2011 CPZ cents:

don't know if anyone's still interested in 2012 penny rolls at face value, but if yer in the Barrie area Walmart on Mapleview has several rolls that they are happy to trade. I just picked up two for my collection

Back in 2012, I thought that the 2011 magnetic cents were rare (I started a 7-page thread that ran active for a year) since I had trouble finding them in circulation (I only found 1 in 2500 pennies)

When the report came out, the mintage for magnetic pennies actually appeared higher than non-magnetic.

At the same time, I released almost all of my 2012 pennies in my collection because I thought that they weren't rare although they were scarcely seen in circulation.

But now, I can't manage to find any 2012 cents in circulation. Not anymore.

Hi, my info comes from Steven Bromberg the shopping Channel coin show. He was on a week ago, and was selling pennies. This info is on another thread too. He said the magnetic pennies are made from 2011 magnetic blanks that were leftover . When these blanks ran out, the zinc ones were used. He says the magnetic ones is the rarer of the two. His company bought something like $6,000 worth of circulation pennies. He claims to have found only 1 2012 penny for evervy 3,000 circulation pennies. Could this be due to hoarding of 2012 pennies, as tons of rolls and boxes are on auction or for sale. There has been a couple threads on the 2012 pennies already. I think they may be rare in circulation due to hoarding. I take his info with a grain of salt since he had a ton of pennies to sell and was asking a huge sum. How much is hype, I cannot say. Rox

If you trust the RCM annual report, you'd find the magnetic cents at a higher mintage. Many 2012 cents are also magnetic.

It's possible. The 2012 cents are collected in rolls and boxes.

It interesting that this came back up. Some guy is selling both pennies in a card and I had not noticed this before.

I would have thought with the copper plating they would both look the same. The steel penny must strike better giving it a better surface finish. Nice product by the way.
