I just bought this coin at an online auction. Let's see if you agree with NGCs grade.

VG10

( at first I said VG8 but theres a lot of LIBERTY showing, the reverse takes it away from being a slider into F12 )

VG-10. The photo doesn't show it clear enough, and the weak spot on the reverse might detract from it but in the real world Fine-12 wouldn't shock me, because full LIBERTY might be there. Probably VG-10, though, as on a more expensive coin as this the TPG doesn't want to take the chance of having to exercise the grading guarantee by overgrading it.

I'm going with vg-8. If there is more hair detail than in the photo vg-10/12.

Well, I do see a complete LIBERTY but not strong enough for a F12.
VG10 here too.

F-12...yet another (semi-key) coin that I will fall short of obtaining.

And the verdict is:

1912-S-Liberty-Nickel:-You-Vs.-NGC

The bend in the coin is so slight that you really wouldn't notice unless someone pointed it out. I paid $130 which I thought was a pretty good price in spite of the problem it has.

I guess the Liberty must be stronger in hand? Either way, I think it is a good score!

CoinsKelly, if I were to grade it I would have given it the same vg-10 grade you did. I think a 'fine' grade was pretty optimistic of NGC especially with the weak reverse.

I was wondering why this coin has such an unusual wear pattern on the reverse. The wear pattern makes a bit more sense now. I was going to guess VG-10 because of the reverse weakness but otherwise the coin has all the details of a Fine.
