I don't think any slots pay cash anymore

It is still possible to find a few machines out there that do pay in cash. These are almost always in the smallest casinos out there or even small stores and gas stations and usually in out of the way places. Border Town in Nevada just across the Calif. state line on the way to Reno comes to mind. Nice place to stop for breakfast, BTW.

Yes they are most likely the only places. We did drive through Rt 50 and found some a few years ago. Neat road! Also some were in MT but none are near me on the east coast anymore!

I don't miss the pull handles but I do miss the sound of coins jangling down into the coin tub when it hits a winner. The ones now just pay off with a paper slip that seems so dead and lifeless compared to the older machines. :-/

Ever notice how payoff coins were always wall-to-wall nix?

They figured flashing lights and lots of noise not only encourage that player, but others around him. Payout slots were designed for maximum coin drop onto a noisy metal surface.

A slot is a glorified cash register. They could have gotten rid of the noise 30 years ago.

Yep, that and the occasional scream of WAH-HOO!!

Three of my friends from work went down to Reno for a couple of days in 1998. We walked into the old Comstock Hotel & Casino and heard a VERY loud scream of WAH-HOO!! just as we came in. One of my friends snapped his fingers and said, "This sounds like our kind of place!". I really liked having dinner there. They had a $6 16-oz. NY steak with vegetables, cheese toast, and choice of potato. It was good too.

All those ringing bells and whistles create a Pavlov's dog response for people in the mood to gamble. It definitely worked on me a couple of times, I'm ashamed to admit.
