SmokinJoe - I'm a member of MetalDetectingForum.com......those guys are all really nice, but they're mostly relic hunters. Silver is silver to them most of them....most would be happy for melt value of their coins. I think the 1916D Merc dime find got more posts than your coin!
Great find! What detector were you using? I swing a Minelab Quattro....found a lot of Civil War relics, just not many old coins, yet.

@Lowlife: I was using the Garret Ace 250. I rewarded myself by immediately ordering the Garret AT Pro. But that was when I thought the coin was worth a few grand. Now that I know it's worth maybe 10 grand, I'm considering a third detector. I really like what I see of the E-trac....and that ML 3030 looks to be awesome. Truth is though...ANY detector would have hit that coin at the mere 3 and half inches it sat at. No detector, no matter how many features it has will increase your odds of finding something "good" as well as research. As for the treasure hunting and metal detecting forums: Them people are are a hard bunch to please. The find of a lifetime relegated to yesterday's news already.

Well I at least received an e-mail today confirming that Heritage has gotten the coin. I was sent a couple documents to sign digitally. Unfortunately no real update yet...hasn't been to the grader. But I do know this much: "Your consignment to the 2012 August 2-3 US coins Signature Auction- Philadelphia will be held on August 02, 2012 in Philadelphia, PA. The catalog for this auction will be mailed on July 14, 2012. Your settlement check will be mailed September 17, 2012". So apparantly it's already passed the authenticity test. I really hope it ends up going to NCS as I think it's eye appeal could be enhanced by some type of permissable cleaning. I mean I really did no cleaning to it all, other than a rinse and dry. This coin is not corroded like other coins I've dug....no pitting, or grunge adhered... it's basically just tarnished. ....it would be a shame if this gets no grade but "environmental damage".

That's awesome news Joe. Heritage just sent me some auction catalogs featuring Rusty Goe's expertise on anything CC. I've been to his store in Reno, real nice guy. Some of us will be at the Philly show in August at the "CCF Get together" AT Pro will most likely be my next machine but I enjoy my ACE 350 for now :)

Who cares man haha, you got the coin, and will get the money... no need to please anyone! It doesn't look like its corroding which is good, if NCS could help it I don't think it would necessarily be good for its value. The thing is that coin collectors cherish original surfaces on their coins so even if its dirty they'd rather have it that way (possibly even prefer it, as you can see in this thread). Be happy that the coin has good detail and forget about that dirty look.

On another note... I think some people are saying the surfaces look "off" because they are not familiar with "ground-found" coins.
NOTHING about this coin looks "wrong", "off", or "fake" to me. It just has the standard environmental damage...

UPDATE: I got word from Heritage today. The coin was graded by NGC as AU50 details with environmental damage. I'm happy with this.
