Just to make sure you don't have any issues in the future have you checked with NYS laws for metal detecting. i.e. have not dug this out of state, city, town, or county land?
I just want to make sure you make it out here with the most money and the least headaches.
Congrats on an amazing find!

I'm also curious what's going on with this if there are any updates at all.

Nothing to update on the coin. Other than gazing at it and calling it "my precious" (lol) I haven't made a move to do anything with the coin. The coin was dug on private land.

I wouldn't just gaze at it. You might be looking at a piece of junk or a brand new high-end car. Get it authenticated. I would find a PCGS/NGC dealer that you trust and have them submit it or you can join the ANA and send it fully insured to NGC yourself. Being a ground find seems to give it a shot at being real. I don't like how the surfaces look, though. They have a fake look due to coloration which normally you don't see on 90% silver.

Let us know when it goes up to auction. Wish I had a crack at before hand, but oh well. I tried.

SmokinJoe good to hear you made a move with it. What's Heritage going to do with it, send it to get it authenticated? It's not going to get "conserved", correct?
Given how it was found, and assuming its genuine, I like the coloring. Such a rare find randomly while metal detecting is amazing and really cool in my mind. It adds depth and a bit of a story to that individual coin.
Can the seller include their own description of the coin at HA.com or does Heritage have full control over that? I would think it would be a good idea to include a little backstory about the coin, like you've already told us here. And any info about the history of this 'private land' might be good too. I dont know, these are just things I'd be interested to know as a buyer.

Depending on whether the coin is liquidated at Heritage....they have control over the writeup but if this one warrants sale there, it will be a rare-enough offering that they'll want to provide a more detailed description than they usually do. This coin is similar to one which hammered at over $18,000 last April. Should they authenticate it, though, you can expect to see images of their typical (very high) quality.

I absolutely will keep this forum posted, as you guys have shown more interest than any other forum I've posted this to. I would have thought that my fellow "treasure hunters" would be the most interested in this find. That hasn't been the case. There seems to be alot of jealousy and disbelief on those boards. Where do people get the nerve to just flat out call someone a liar with really nothing to base that opinion on? Anyway, I'm hoping to at least hear from Heritage today to tell me that they have received the coin. Wasn't easy for me to decide to sell it....let alone send it off in the mail. I'll update when I hear something. You all have a great day!
