WOW!! Treat this well!! And I agree with the crowd, get it authenticated.

From the pictures, I'd certainly think it was genuine...

Wow! That is quite a find! I am not seeing anything that would make me doubt its authenticity. It still should be certified in any case. Do you think you could post a close up of the reverse as well?

Well I'm a metal detector, not a coin collector. So I really don't know where to start. First off, which grading servise should I use? ANACS, PCGS, NCS, NGC, etc.? Should I have it professionaly cleaned or leave it as is? and what exactly does having it "slabbed" mean, and is that something I want to do? If not, what should I have done with it? If I choose to sell it, what would be the best way of going about that? ebay, auction, coin site, trade show?

If your goal is to sell it you will generally get a better sale if it is slabbed (graded and encapsulated) by PCGS. After you have it authenticated you will have a better chance of a sale at a major coin auction as opposed to ebay.

Or just offer it to Moe, he will probably need one.

WOW!! Just WOW. You have unearthed a major rarity. I agree with the others that it looks like the real thing.
Don't clean it, wipe it or rinse it. Don't even touch it on the surfaces if you can avoid it. And by all means get it authenticated by a TPG.

It looks like you did a significant amount of cleaning between the 1st and 2nd picture! You shouldn't be scrubbing the dirt off as it will hurt the value.

I would try to have the coin authenticated first (if it were mine) and ANACS requires no membership. If money is not a major concern, then submit it is NCS for conservation (which I believe will require a membership). ANACS would cost under $100 including round-trip shipping and that's your best bet. They will confirm if it's genuine and place it in a clear plastic holder (slab) with their estimate of the grade and condition.

I would simply put it in a package, send it off to Anacs registered mail, and hope for the best. (i would pay more for a walk through service meaning they will grade it fast and have it back)
If the coin does come back real then you can go into the thoughts of spending extra cash to have it cleaned. If it does you won;t need to worry about having it regraded because youw uill know you are in the money.

After its all said and done at least put it on CCF auctions before trying to sell on ebay or heritage. Give the people who helped you out the first chance at it.

@BH1964: No, I haven't done anymore cleaning. The first pics of obverse and reverse were taken with my cell phone. The much crisper shot was taken with my Canon DSLR and a close-up filter attached. Oh, and I also corrected the white balance in that image so it is closer in color to the real thing. Later this evening if I get some time I will set up tripod and flash heads and take the very best shot I can get.
I want to say thanks to all you fellas...your enthusiasm has me so stoked!

True, but my RedBook has this coin at AU50 at $40,000. A WEE bit out of my budget...

The coin not only appears authentic, but level of detail I would say AU 55. Do not clean it any more, leave it alone and send it via UPS to PCGS.

Wow what a find! I'm glad you didn't nick it with you're trowel . Did you soak it in distilled water? Definitely don't want to contaminate a coin of this magnitude with tap water.

I'm perdicting this coin or member will disspoint us all. It will be a fake, shame or real and we never hear about it because the seller has dollar signs in his eyes.
