I have every reason to believe this coin is real, and it certainly is not a shame (scam?). When I have the coin graded I will let all of you know the results. If, and when I decide to sell it I will make it available to this group first. Although I have to admit, you guys have given me the impression it would be out of your price range. By the way, what's wrong with having dollar signs in my eyes?

A coin of that value should probably be sold through Stacks or Heritage to maximize your return.

If you have dollar signs in your eyes, which I *ABSOLUTELY* would with this coin, I dont see any reason why you would pick a company other than PCGS to submit it to. PCGS repeatedly tends to bring top dollar at auctions compared to other slabs.
I also wouldnt attempt to sell it at a forum like this. There is too much risk involved in a transaction this high. I would without a doubt consign it to a firm such as Heritage. In fact, if you call them and talk to them, they will handle the entire process for you - including slabbing. They do take a certain cut, but I have to think you'd still come out ahead because of the number of eyes that would be on the coin.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Heritage will offer to buy coins from you out right if you don't want to wait for an auction to be held.

I agree with everyone else, Heritage Auctions. PCGS slab is a must. There is the Long Beach Coin Expo end of May, you should attend.

A thought would be to send hi-res photos of the coin to Heritage for their expert opinion/advice. If Heritage thinks it's genuine, they will be more than happy to accept it raw "as-is" and take it from there. NCS would be where it would be sent to (in all likelihood) and you wouldn't pay to have it graded since Heritage would cover that through their auction fees. I would NOT send the coin to PCGS "as-is" because it is unlikely to grade with the grime/contaminant on it. PCGS could authenticate it of course. I would post hi-res images of both surfaces here. We won't be able to determine absolute authenticity but may have further opinions/advice.

Edit: hmmm BH1964 makes a good point. Could it not be sent to NCS first though to get rid of the grime? Dont clean it anymore yourself though, of course.
I dont think there's anything wrong wanting to get paid for it. You arent a collector and this coin has little meaning to you; why not pass it off to someone who does value it. I dont understand why some collectors have animosity towards people selling coins and trying to make a profit. If this didnt happen then where would our collection come from?

I have talked to collectors here who have doen transactions this big before. I also said send it to Anacs first simple because they are a decent price and it wil let you know if the coin is real or not. If it is real I would do everythign else stated above. I just wouldn't put alot of $$$$$ before you know if its genuine or not.

ANACS is fine but NCS would determine authenticity as well. If it turns out it is genuine, a PCGS or NGC holder is a must for most realized money at Heritage or Stacks should you go that route.

Wow I need to get a metal detector so I can find roundness like that what is a good metal detector to buy. I'm going on another mission to an island here in Alaska that was taken over back in ww2 I have found lots of cool things out there already on the beaches I'm sure if I brought a metal detector I would find some real good stuff

Very skeptical that a rarity of this order in apparent AU condition could be found metal detecting. A shipwreck, perhaps, if it were part of a horde of thousands of halves but not some random find out of the ground.
Probably one of the better Chinese fakes.

Okay guys, I have an appointment today to have an authorized PCGS agent take a look at the coin and give me his opinion before I send it anywhere. I'll let ya know how it went later this evening. I have no worries...i just know this is the real deal.
