Oh, by the way, there is a coin shop within a couple of miles of the track BUT it closes when the track is busy!!!

Wow an Australian coin forum!

Makes a nice change to the run of the mill darkside alternative of British.

The Aussie forum is an excellent forum. I'm a member there myself, though I don't post often due to my lack of knowledge...

rggoodie, toast
Thanks for the Mintmark lesson! How does the "g" mintmark work? I assume the coins aren't actually minted in Gallipoli?

you are correct SFDukie the Gmm was not minted at Gallipoli, these coins (40,000) were minted at the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra with the majority having the G pressed/stamped at the Royal Australian Mint; however there was a small quantity available for a period of 7 days from the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. The ones here were done on the portable press. I dont know correct mintages but I am sure one of the other Aussies will.

These Gmm coins are going thru the roof in Australia they were sold at an issue price of $2.75 and are now selling on ebay around the $22.00 and upwards mark.

Mintages
6,000 at the Australian war memorial using the portable press. And 34,000 using the regular mint press.

Hi Toast, are there any other coins you're aware of where the MM doesn't correspond with the actual mint site?

Interesting question as there are only two "physical" operating mints in Australia. The RAM ( Royal Australia Mint) is located in Canberra and the PM ( Perth Mint) is in Perth.

All the M,S,B,A & H type MM's are actually minted in Canberra, but are also minted by portable presses at Coin Shows/Fairs held each year at those cities. These are our "Mint your own dollars" and are available at those coin shows.

THe Perth Mint with the "P" MM concentrates only in the minting of NCLT's, Bullion Coins and coins for other Countries. Having said that so does the RAM.
