Here is an unusual foreign coin. It is paper thin and holed. I can make out some arabic or farsi letters but I am not sure. Looks to be silver but the heavy tarnish makes it look copper (not sure though).

Any ideas?

It's Ottoman Turkey. A lot of their coins are imitated for jewelry or costumes but yours looks genuine to me (although it was holed to be used as jewelry or a part of a costume).

I believe it's billon 20 para of Sultan Abdul Mejid. I see the accession date of AH 1255 (AD 1839). These were minted (in Constantinople) for 5 years, looks like your has regnal year 3 (or 2, a little worn in that area, but my bet is on 3). This would date your coin about AD 1841.

The first side seems to have the symbol that I have seen on Ottoman coins.

Could very well be a 20 Para!

That symbol is Tughra, it some sort of signature for Ottoman sultan.

Coin is in pretty bad condition so I cant tell anything about year or denomination.
