This is my one old gold piece. It has not been slabbed but I was wondering what you guys thought its grade is (and if I should send it to a third party grader?). I can provide more pictures if requested. Thanks for your time.

Very nice, looks to be in MS grade, from the photos I think it can grade MS-60 to 61, the reverse has some contact marks, and there's seem to be some rubbing above the FIVE D.

So it maybe tempered with in the past?

I will guess this coin is in the AU range. There is luster around the protected areas around the stars and the letters but just beyond the protected areas the surface does not appear to be as lustrous which I think may be evidence of wear. Unless it is at least MS-62/63, I would probably keep it raw.

Gorgeous virtually mark free but does show some loss of luster. I would say a strong AU-58.

I respectfully disagree. The photos are pretty clear and definitely show the intact luster in the protected areas between the letters and stars near the rim. The open fields obviously lack this luster and I consider that to be conclusive evidence the coin is no longer mint state. There is also visible wear on the hair above the coronet and bun high points. I would grade it AU-50.

As a circulated example of a common date this coin would not be worth putting in a slab. You would not recover the cost of certification if and when you want to sell. As long as the weight checks out (about 8.35 grams) almost any buyer would accept it as a genuine piece even as a raw coin.

I don't think it is MS either. Close, but not quite. That being the case you would never recoup the cost of having it graded.

I'd say its somewhere in the AU range. The luster just isn't strong enough and there appears to be a slight amount of wear on the eagles neck and wing tips (although this may just be the photo). Nice coin though.

Thanks again everyone for your comments and advice. Definitely confirmed my decision to not slab it. I always thought it was in the AU-55 to MS60 range which seems to be in the ballpark.

I could see this in an ANACS slab, but with both shipping and the slab cost, you'd be out with $40-50 instantly.

I like the look of this coin. It looks to be in the AU range but if it was fully lusterous, probably would go 62. I don't think it's worth slabbing. That's the type of gold I like to purchase myself and raw is fine.

ICG graded this $5 piece AU-53. ICG had a $10 per coin special (and I live near them in Tampa so I don't have to pay for shipping).

I would have said it was either high AU or low MS. ANACS goes to lots of big coin shows. If you have one near you, you can sometimes have them grade your coin on site.

All the TPG's go to shows, if you wish to spend $100+ on getting it graded.
