My calibrations are off on my scale...but have a question concerning weight. Weight of a 1971 is 3.36g Weight of a 2006 is 2.74g Weight of a 1983 is 3.01g would you say that this is enough of an off for the 1983 to be a brass coin?   Edited by rocktowngal

UH, where is the weight for the 1983? Are we supposed to guess?

I put 1973 instead of 1983 my mistake...so sorry!

If you have a "tare" button on your scale hit that before weighing , make sure your at "0" zero and weigh again. I thought the 1983 would be heavier being bronze 3.11 like the copper pennies, and zinc are 2.25

PapaTony - I do have a tare button...I hit that then did the weight again and it is 3.01

Okay now. I have it cal berated right. Didn't know 20 nickels weighed 100.00 and that is what I needed to get that weight right.
Anyway re weighted it and it is 2.77g
The weight of the other coins are now...2.50 and 3.11

Ah cool I didn't know that either! Thanks! That is a strange weight , I am not sure if it is within tolerance I will try to check! The 95% copper cents should weigh 3.1 grams. The zincolns should weigh 2.5 grams. A post 1982 cent weighing more than 3 grams should be examined more closely.

Possible die clash in Bay number #3 on the Reverse and maybe part of his beard in #8? :)

They look like they match up...are their marks in the 3rd and 8th bays...here is a cent overlay.
there is a brief discription here and an overlay. The best thing to do would be to google die clash and find some good explainations...
The line in the upper #3 Bay looks like its in the right spot...i am not sure about the #8....its also hard for me to tell with out a zoomed in pic of the questioned area.

Have you tried the drop test? Drop the coin on to a table top and if it has a thud kind of sound it's zinc and if it has a rind it is copper, maybe. I found a 1983 this morning that weights 2.9g and sounds like zinc. The mint tolerance is +/- .13g. John1  |

John if The mint tolerance is +/- .13g. Then this coin is 27g over the 2.5g weight and 34g under the 3.11g weight...so wonder what I have here.
I did the drop test and it sounds like a ring. Had hubby and son listen they thought it also sounded like a ring. It wasn't a thud.
Not sure what to do now.

To verify weight is there somewhere you can take it like a coin shop or the post office or maybe a pharmacy? John1 |

I cannot see anything about this coin that makes it anything but normal. The weight might be a little off, but not enough that it would cause alarm.
